VERY odd?! but my HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 will not power on unless the Windows 10 PC I use is logged into the desktop.

Meaning, I'm unable to do Copies or print stationary or anything standalone without waking the computer first.

with the computer in a logged out state and the screen off, the ethernet connected printer will not power up by using the power button.

Power supply has power and I've performed a PSU reset a few times.

Have even tried with the ethernet cable disconnected to the printer. (WiFi is off) but it will not startup as a standalone device.

Connect the printer to the network and log into the PC and within a few secs startup occurs and the HP screen comes alive!!!

Surely this must be a setting somewhere? As I've never seen an HP printer do this before

{puzzled}

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that your printer screen is blank, I am glad to assist you.

You might have to perform a semi-full reset on the printer to fix this issue.

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I am sending you a private message with the steps to reset the printer. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen.

I hope this helps resolve this issue completely.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.

thanks for the reply, the screen is only blank when the computer is not logged in.  There is literally NO power up! 😵

the moment you login to the computer as the active user, the printer springs to life and functions as normal.

It's as though it has to get some sort of go ahead from the SMART software installed in the user profile

I've been around HP printers long enough to know this isn't normal 🤓

in fact I have NEVER seen a printer fail to function standalone, until the computer is logged in.

a reset (semi or other) is the only option, and I will try it - thank-you

Was hoping others had experienced this oddity before I went full "baby out with the bathwater"

Yes, try these steps at your leisure, and let me know how it goes.
