HP Officejet Pro 8720

Hi Guys,

I recently replaced all the ink cartridges in our officejet pro 8720.   All cartridges are showing as full but when I try to print the black ink will not work.  I have tried doing all the maintenance steps guided by the printer but nothing has worked so far.

Any ideas on how to fix it - replacing  the ink as rather expensive so I'd like to save the printer if possible

TIA

@pfnc,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • Have you tried cleaning the print head?
  • Do you face the same issue while making a copy?

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Power Reset

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  • Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
  • If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
  • Try to print.
  • If the issue persists, proceed to the next step

Step 2: Clean the print head(ignore this step if already performed)

  • On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon.

  • Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  • Touch Clean Printhead, and then touch Continue.

    A test page prints.

  • Check the print quality. If the quality is unacceptable, proceed to the 2nd level of cleaning.

    • Perform up to 3 levels of cleaning if the issue persists.

Step 3: Update the printer firmware

  • Refer to this link to update the printer firmware.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them all but black is still not printing.  Is there anything else I can try?

@pfnc,

You can try manually cleaning the printhead.

Refer to this video for instructions.

Also, please check if you have followed all the troubleshooting steps, mentioned under this document.
