Recently purchased Office Jet Pro 7740 to replace an Office Jet 6978 that died. I didn't really want this printer but due to the COVID-19 situation it was the only printer the store had in stock. I use this a lot on a daily basis as I am working from home.
The HP smart software for scanning is extremely slow compared to the HP scan version used on the 6978 (It sucks!!!!!). The scan seems to happen quickly but it take the software 60-90 seconds sometimes longer to become ready to scan a page. When scanning multiple pages that can not be scanning thru the document feeder into into a PDF, it takes 60-120 seconds sometimes longer just to set up for each new page. So scanning a multiple page document takes a huge amount of time.
I never had this issue with the HP Scanner software used on the 6978.
I've installed the latest version of the software and the printer is on the most current version of the firmware.
Any suggestions (other than junk it and buy another brand)?
Is there some solution or different software that can be used to scan on the 7740.

Hello @AngryScanner ,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
First download only this complete package: "HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories ". File name: OJ7740_Full_WebPack_40.12.1161.exe (175.1 MB)
Then the HP software must be completely uninstalled and removed of the system, Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows) .
Then proceed as follows:
Check the system for
- TuneUp`s
- Optimization Tools
- Cleanup Tools
disable them, better uninstall them. Next...
- Disconnect printer/scanner from computer- Disable WLAN and/or remove the USB or LAN cable.- Do not switch off the printer >> unplug the power cord from the socket!
- uninstall all HP software > via "Programs and Features"
- Restart the PC
- Change File-Explorer-Settings:View > Options > "Change folder and search options" > Tab "View"
- enable > Show hidden files, folders and drives
- uncheck > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- search for "HP [printer name]"and delete all this folders
- Empty the TEMP folders
- A) C:\Users\[Your user account]\AppData\Local\Temp\
- B) C:\Windows\Temp\ system files cannot be deleted!
- Reconnect the printer to the power supply and switch it on (if this does not happen automatically)
- Please note: WLAN has to be deactivated!
- Restart the PC
- Close all programs
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads click on the EXE, see above.
Via USB, means wait until the installation asks to connect the printer/scanner. Document error messages, even better is a screenshot and upload here.
The network configuration or the type of connection can be changed later.
Note:
Change the File Explorer settings again -
- enable > Don`t show hidden files, folders or drives
- click button > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- OK
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
Andreas
