I got the Officejet pro 8740 several months ago and like it very much- no problem. But, I'm wondering about the following. On my Dell desktop- if I look at the network icon in my "tray" in the lower right corner of the screen- it lists several wifi networks. I don't have my old router's wifi turned on because my wife thinks it'll give me brain cancer! But I happen to look at that network list occaisionally. I presume my desktop network card is picking up signals from routers in the neighborhood. They come and go. But, when I set up this printer I don't recall turning on the wifi feature of the printer since I have it connected by an enthernet cable to my router. So, in the network listings in that tray- I see "Direct A5- HP Office Jet Pro 8740". If I click on that, I see a checkmark in a box to "connect automatically" and a button to "connect". So, what gives? Is this only in case I can fool my wife and turn on the router's wifi? Does its listing mean that the printer is sending out a wifi signal? If so, how can I turn it off? I'm not going to click on the connect button to see what hapens as I don't do anything on my computer without knowing what will happen ahead of time.

@JoeZ9 I respect your wife's decision on using wifi, although, it's important to keep in mind, major issues as such only occur due to excessive usage, besides we've got radio waves all around us, its just that we don't see them with our naked eyes, that said, here's what you need to know about the Direct A5- HP Office Jet Pro 8740, it's a wifi-direct feature, it helps connect your printer to your computer without a need of the router, it's a direct connection to print anything you wish to print from your computer or a mobile device.
If you wish to turn it off, here's what you need to do:
From the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the Dashboard, and then touch (Wi-Fi Direct).
Touch ( Settings ).If the display shows that Wi-Fi Direct is On, touch Wi-Fi Direct and then switch it off.
For more details on using it: Click here to view your user guide (Page. 104 > Chapter 8 > Network setup)
Keep me posted, as I (Or a trusted colleague) shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,
And your device is up and running again, only in case you don't get back to us, first!
That said, If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
That'll help us, and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Riddle_Decipher, thanks for your reply. It makes sense now as I do recall reading in the manual how the printer can communicate direct with a mobile device. I'll presume the signal, in case I don't bother to turn it off, is a rather weak one compared to a router- and I won't mention this to my wife whose computer is closest to it. 🙂
Also, which I didn't mention before, I see in the tray's network icon the following "HP-PRINT-BF-ENVY 4500 SERIES".
Before I purchased the 8740, I purchased another HP printer, I think it was the ENVY. But I didn't like- so I returned it and got the 8740. So, it could be that when installing the ENVY, that item got listed in my tray- or, it might indicate somebody in my neighborhood has it and my system is picking it up? The houses here aren't that close together. I did of course uninstall the software for the ENVY.
By the way, I really do like the 8740. I've had it for several months now and I intend to write a review for it on the HP site and also on the web sites for Staples (where I got it) and that for Best Buy. The only thing I'm not fond of is the price for ink.

@JoeZ9 I hope your wife doesn't get to know or we'll be in serious trouble! (I am now an accomplice in this crime) 😉
If you saved the HP Envy to your wireless network, you could simply forget it using the wifi settings menu, using the below steps:
To delete a wireless network profile in Windows 10:
- Click the Network icon on the lower right corner of your screen.
- Click Network settings.
- Click Manage Wi-Fi settings.
- Under Manage known networks, click the network you want to delete.
- Click Forget. The wireless network profile is deleted.
If it's just your neighbor's printer showing up, there's nothing we could do about it, except connect to it (if you know the password) and print some random pictures to have some fun at boring Mondays. 😉
I hope that helps,
let me know if you need anything else.
Take care.
