My printer only prints yellow and black. I installed new HP color cartridges but have a  non-HP  black cartridge. I did not have a problem before or now with it printing black. How can I get it to recognize the magenta and blue colors?

@Whyme74,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • Do you have the same issue while making a copy?

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Check the ink cartridge levels.

  • Touch the ink icon on the printer
  • Replace any low or empty ink cartridges.

Step 2: Power Reset

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  • Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
  • Try to print/copy
  • If the issue persists, proceed to the next step

Step 3: Clean the printhead

  • Load plain white paper into the tray.

  • On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon.

  • Swipe the display to scroll to Printer Maintenance, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  • Touch Clean Printhead.

    A test page prints.

  • Examine the test page.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Clean Again to continue the next level of cleaning. If necessary, repeat these steps for the third cleaning cycle.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, touch Done.
