"Original jammed in document feeder". I have tried all remedies recommended but no success. Could it be a failed photocell? And if so, can it be replaced?

Printer works fine for print and scan but error message obscures the control panel so I can't photocopy anything, even 1-sided.

@baldbeard99, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Document Feeder jam!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

vIt’s possible that a faulty photocell (optical sensor) in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is causing the issue, but before assuming a hardware failure, try these additional troubleshooting steps:

1. Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Clean the ADF Sensors & Rollers

  • Open the ADF cover and look for any tiny bits of paper or dust.
  • Clean the ADF rollers and sensors with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Let everything dry before closing the ADF.

3. Check for Any Stuck Sensors

  • Some printers have a small plastic sensor lever inside the ADF. If it’s stuck or broken, it could be triggering a false jam error.
  • Gently move the sensor with a cotton swab to see if it’s obstructed.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to HP’s website and check for firmware updates.
  • Install any available updates, as newer versions might fix sensor-related errors.

5. Hard Reset the Printer

  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Wait for the printer to restart and check if the error persists.

No joy, Zoey7886. I have tried everything in the detailed video Fixing a Paper Jam on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Printer HP OfficeJet HP and also the hard reset you suggested. Now, I have a worse problem! The error message obscures the control panel so I can't access the printer options such as connecting to wi-fi.

Before, I could print/scan one-sided even though I couldn't photocopy. Now, I can't even print because HP Instant Ink won't let me unless my wi-fi is working.

The printer is junk - such a waste!
