My printer says it is "Out of Paper," but plenty of paper exists. The paper is new and is not curled up. I took out the tray and put it back, ensuring it was placed well.  Not sure what else to do, please help!

@kj1-_,Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

(Your printer’s clearly playing a little game of “Find the Paper” 😅 But don’t worry, I’m here to be your paper whisperer and get things back on track! Let’s troubleshoot this together and give that printer a gentle nudge back to reality.😎)

Here are a few steps we can try to get it to recognize that there’s plenty of paper in there. Ready? Let's roll!

Check the surface the printer rests on

  1. Make sure that the surface the printer rests on is flat, level, and hard.
  2. Make sure that part of the printer's base does not rest on anything that might cause the printer to tilt, even slightly.
  3. Pull out the paper tray.
  4. Load 10 sheets of U.S. letter or A4 plain white paper in the paper tray.
  5. Push the paper tray back into the printer.

Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the paper tray area.

  1. Pull out the paper tray and then remove any paper.

Garp_senchau_0-1738253442096.png

  1. Carefully turn the printer on its side.
Check the gap where the input tray was on the bottom of the printer. If there is any jammed paper, reach into the gap, and then use both hands to pull the paper out.

Garp_senchau_1-1738253442097.png

  1. Make sure there is no torn paper in the paper pick rollers. You might need a flashlight for this.
  2. Turn the printer upright.
  3. Load paper into the paper tray and then push it back into the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Remove any loose or jammed paper that is accessible from the ink cartridge access area.

  1. Turn off the printer and then disconnect the power cord and any other cables.
      warning:
You must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

Garp_senchau_2-1738253513917.png

  1. Pull out the paper path cover.

Garp_senchau_3-1738253513918.png

  1. Locate any jammed paper inside the printer. Grasp any jammed paper with both hands, and then pull the paper slowly but firmly toward you to remove it.

Garp_senchau_4-1738253513918.png

  1. Use your fingers to lift the flip gate on the duplex rollers.
  2. Check for jammed paper underneath the flip gate.
  3. Press the flip gate down until it snaps into place and then reinsert the paper path cover.
  4. If the carriage is not obstructed, move the carriage to the right or left of the printer, and then remove any jammed paper. To avoid tearing the paper, use both hands to pull out the paper.
  5. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  6. Reconnect the power cord and any other cables to the rear of the printer and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the automatic document feeder (ADF).

  1. Lift the cover of the ADF.

Garp_senchau_8-1738253638480.png

  1. Pull out any jammed paper from the rollers.

Garp_senchau_9-1738253638482.png

  1. Close the ADF cover tightly at both ends.

Try to scan or copy from the ADF. If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Make sure the carriage moves freely across the width of the printer.

  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

Garp_senchau_10-1738253638483.png

  1. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.
      warning:
You must unplug the power cord to move the carriage by hand and reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of electrical shock.
  4. Use a flashlight to check for and remove any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.
      caution:
If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for any torn pieces of paper. If pieces of paper remain in the printer, more paper jams can occur.
  5. Reach inside the printer, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer, move the carriage to the left side of the printer.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
  6. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
  7. Make sure the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the printer, and then push it to the right side.
  8. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  10. Plug the power cord back into the power source or electrical outlet.
  11. Turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Clean the rollers underneath the printer.

  1. Carefully lift the printer and set it on its side.
  2. While supporting the printer with one hand, pull the paper tray open to expose the paper rollers underneath the printer.
  3. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
  4. Press the cloth against the rollers inside the printer and then rotate the rollers upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
  5. Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).
  6. Close the paper tray and then set the printer upright.

Try to print. If the error persists, clean the rollers in another area of the printer.

Update Printer Firmware:

  1. HP regularly releases firmware updates that may fix issues like this. Make sure the printer is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Check for available updates and install them if necessary. Click here

Make sure the printer is directly plugged into a functioning wall outlet

If the printer is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, the printer might not be getting enough power to properly function. To resolve the issue, plug the printer into a wall outlet.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer power cord from the power strip or surge suppressor.
  3. Inspect the power cord for any wear or damage. If the power cord shows any damage, contact HP to replace the power cord.
       note:

Is this a message on the printer panel itself or an error that comes up when you try to print? Paper errors can also be generated when the print job is sent formatted to print on a certain type of paper or size of paper, but that paper is not loaded in the printer.

Subject: Printing Issue Update

Hi,

Thank you for your detailed response!

I didn’t have any paper jammed, but your information will be useful for future reference. I ended up cleaning the rolled pads, and now I can print using the HP Smart application. Interestingly, the HP Smart application still shows that I am "out of paper", but at least, this time, I can print this time.

Best regards,

Vanessa

I wasn't receiving any error messages from the printer; I just couldn't print at all. In both my computer and the HP Smart app, it indicated that the printer was out of paper. Now, it still displays that message, but I am able to print it.
