Suddenly my printer seems to no longer be working....  I get an error message saying 'filter failed', and that I need to update my driver or contact the manufacturer.  No driver updates are available, and really nothing has changed in the past week (ie. no other software updates, can't imagine what else would have caused the sudden change).

Any one seen this message before?

Hi kunsthof,

Thanks for providing that information.

There is no direct link for the drivers except that Apple Updates which are available.

You can try downloading and installing this driver which might work with Maverick.

HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X.

I would verify and repair the disk permission on the Mac.

On the Apple menu bar, click Go, applications, utilities, disk utility, click on Mac harddrive on the left side, click on verify disk permissions, when that is finished click repair disk permissions.

(when it is finished will show disk repair completed)

I would reset the printing system.
Note: This will delete all the printers listed and you will have to add them back in again.

Go to the Apple, system preferences, print and scan, hold down the control button on the keyboard and click your mouse in the white area on the left side of the window, reset printing system comes up, select it and put in Mac password.

Disconnect the USB cable and restart the Mac.

Then connect the USB cable back to see if the drivers will update automatically.

Then try and add the printer back in by selecting the + button in print and scan window, if the driver didn't automatically install.

Let me know how you make out.

Hi kunsthof,

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!

I understand you are getting a filter failed error message.

I will be happy to help you.

Try the following:

Click on the Apple, select System Preferences, then Sharing.

Do one of the following:

If the Computer Name field is blank, enter a name for your computer.

If there is a name in the Computer Name field, rename your computer.

Close the Sharing window.

Click on the Apple, Select System Preferences,  Print & Scan, then select your printer in

the Printer list. Click Options and Supplies.

Select General, if necessary. In the Location: field, enter the computer name which you

entered previously. Click OK.

Try printing again.

If that doesn't work then add the printer as IP Protocal if the printer is setup on a wireless network.

Print a configuration page to get the IP address.

Printing a Configuration Page.

You can add the printer as a IP Protocal to see if it will work.
Go to the Apple, system preferences, print and scan, click on the + sign then select the IP

icon across the top, type in the printer's IP address, select jet direct below and then apply.

Hope this resolves your issue.

Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

Hi, thanks for your suggestions.  Unfortunately they didn't end up helping.... the second doesn't apply because I use a USB connection.

I began to suspect that it was an Apple software issue, as I was also unable to save documents as pdfs (or at least the first and last few pages would be blank).  But I recently noticed that if I change to destination printer to something other than my P1102 machine, the save as pdf function in the printer window works just fine.  So something is definitely amiss with my HP P1102 printer driver.

Today I removed the printer from my list of printers and then re-added it.  No luck, I can't even really add it as it says it's missing the driver for this printer.  (this is really strange, as I've been using this printer on this computer for six months, no problems).  I went on your website to try and download a driver and start over from scratch, but your instructions assume that the driver is already on my OS.  Is there no other way to download it manually?   Is this a known issue?

Thanks for your help!

Hi, I've been doing some more searching, and it looks like Apple has dropped the driver for the HP Laserjet P1102 from its list.  The printer is no longer listed online on the apple site:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP

I also got in touch with a service rep who confirmed this.  As this printer is, as far as I can tell, still on the market, perhaps someone needs to look into this?  In the meantime, is there a direct download link where I can get the driver?  The information you provide online seems to assume that the driver is included in OS 10.9, which is apparently no longer the case...

That seems to have solved the problem...  the disk utility did find and then fix an error, and after reseting the printers and restarting it works fine again.  Thanks!

Hi...I am having the exact same problem with an OfficeJet 5510 All-in-One.  "filter failed".  Repaired permissions as described and still getting the error.  Other ideas?  Thank you!

Hi ndjole,

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!

I understand you are having the same issue with the filter error.

I will be happy to help you.

After doing the disk repair and resetting the printing system I would try and delete and readd the printer again to see if that will resolve the issue.

Click on the Apple.
Click system preferences, click the print and scan icon, highlight the printer and click on the - sign to delete the printer, then click the + sign,  select the printer from the list, make sure the printer listed beside use: shows the proper printer name and not Airprint,(Airprint is a preinstalled apple driver with basic functionality) click on the add button.

Restart the Mac.

You might have to run the Apple Updates again.

OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac.

Try printing again.

If you require further help please provide the following information so I can help you better.

How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)

Were you able to add the printer back in?

Hope this helps.

Hi - thank you for the quick response!  I have already deleted and re-added the printer several times, to no avail.  I ran updates several times and everything is up to date.  The printer is connected via USB.  Every time I add the printer, I get the same problem.  Other ideas?
