PageWide 377dw MFP 972 and 972X

We just purchased the new  HP PageWide 377dw M and went to insert the 972X cartridge into the printer and it isn't compatible with the printer. Is there a way to make the printer accept the 972x cartridge?

No, the HP 972x cartridges are only intended for the HP PageWide 400 or 500 series:

The PageWide 300 Series only accept the 972A cartridges not the 972x:

I see we are not the only ones who spent a ridiculous amount of money on both a printer and the replacement cartridges at OfficeMax, only to learn when it came time to replace our black cartridge that they told us would work with our HP PageWide MFP 377dw, the 972x black does not, in fact, work with our printer. Of course we do not have a receipt, seeing as how we purchased this a year ago after Hurricane Irma booted us out of our home, and we had to replace our printers, etc. upon return. 

How does HP deal with all of us who are angry, out of option spenders, when we matched the box with the printer numbers to the numbers on the printer?

HP: shame yourself!  Have same issue with my Pagewide 377DW; would have known such limitation, I would have bougth 477dw instead, for 70-90 euros more. Limitation was not clearly stated, and looks just a commercial choise of HP, as long as the internal mechanics are exactly the same between the two above models.
