My printer has a set of brand-new generic cartridges (Y-M-C-K) and will not work. The error message displayed reads -
Printing Problem
Printing Functionality is disabled. Please contact HP
Error Code 0xc6fd0913
I am led to believe that HP requires you to only buy their brand of cartridges that are at least 3X.
Do I have an option?

As near as I can tell from the service documentation this error is related to an issue with the pen head temperature sensor. You should remove all cartridges, unplug printer, leave for 2 minutes, then hold the power button with the power cord disconnected to ensure all electronics are drained. Then reconnect and start up and install supplies when prompted. Also ensure that the device has been a warm environment for at least an hour. This error can be triggered when placing the device in an area that is too cold. If none of this helps sensor replacement is the next recommended step PN D3Q24-67005
From what i have seen, generic cartridges work but set a flat in the firmware indicating that 3rd party cartridges were used and this flag being tripped voids any printhead warranty. Even if you put OEM cartridges back in, that flag will always be tripped.

Thanks @Repairatrooper, I shall try all you have recommended and revert back.
There are variations of what you have suggested on the Internet, and I did all of that but for "draining the electronics" part you have suggested. The printer has always been in the home office and so has never been in left in an area that is "too cold". It worked wonderfully well for two years after I was delivered to me "new". The first set of replacement cartridges were HP, and they worked well without any issues. With the generic replacements - I have had the issue but shall follow your recommendations and shall be back.

@Repairatrooper - I followed the directions you had provided and thought there was some progress as the initial error message was something about "cannot guarantee print quality" (maybe because it detected generic toner cartridges). I asked it to look at the levels of the cartridges and it showed almost full on all of Y-M-C-K. But when I asked it to print a test report, it ran through some cycles and gave this error message:
Printer Problem
Printer functionality is disabled. Please contact HP
Error Code: 0xc6fd0113
Before following the steps you had recommended - the error code was 0xc6fd0913.
I shall try to look up what this error code is and have a CD for the Instructions Manual but have to go look for a CD reader or research the Internet to see if I can see what the issue may now point to. In any case if I have to replace the temperature sensor, I have to consider that as an option.
Many Thanks for your help.

That error references the same issue, the printhead sensor thinks it is cold. The manual does state that you should try the power drain up to three times so you may want to try that again, however my gut feeling is you have an issue that is going to require parts. My company is restricted by an NDA and therefore I cannot share electronic or physical copies of manuals. If you search google you may well find them out there as they are often posted.
