Many thanks for a quick reply.  I wanted to print the thickest A4 paper possible, looking at the specifications page (input tray) would it be the plain paper which is 90g/m2 or would it be photo paper 250g/m2

Most newer printers are paper "type" sensitive, which means, the sensor in the printer can detect photo paper.  For exampler, if you try to set Media type "photo paper" in the print settings and then try to trick the printer by putting a different type of paper into the tray, it will likely not work.

The rest of the setup is related to both what the Input tray can handle

AND

Whether your printer supports Custom form (custom paper size)

If your printer supports creating a Custom form, find the setup located in:

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Left-Click on your Printer one time to highlight >

What does Custom Form do for you?

While the printer will likely reject a non-conforming Media type selection (paper in tray does not match Media type in print settings), Custom Paper Size allows you to create a "custom sized paper" form in the size you want (A4).

For example:

  • Start with a provided standard sized "card" form and from that form, create your custom size form.
  • Card paper (Media type) is allowed (on this printer) 163 to 200 g/m2 (90 to 110 lb index).

Can you do the same with photo paper to create an A4 form?  Try it and see.  Create the custom form starting with a "photo paper" form in a provided (listed) standard size.  Restart the computer and log in.  Set up the print job; select Media type "photo" paper, look for the new A4 size in the list of paper sizes.

"Misconfigured" (not allowed" combinations are marked with a tiny yellow triangle.  Sometimes, you can get around this by changing the "order" in which you make the selections (select size first, then media type, or other "order of events").  Sometimes a "non-selectable" combination is just that -- "not going to happen" no matter the order in which you select the settings.
