HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 All-in-One Printer

Hi everyone! My printer is displaying a message about the paper tray being open, but it is in fact not open! Has this happened to anyone else? Anyway to clear the message?

@Kristen0606, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

That’s definitely frustrating—especially when you’re sure the tray is closed! Since your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 is still showing the "paper tray open" message, there are a few things you can try to get it back on track.

Pull out the paper tray completely, then slide it back in firmly to ensure it’s seated correctly.

Even a small piece of paper or debris inside the tray slot can prevent it from registering as closed.

There’s usually a small sensor inside the tray slot that detects when it’s closed. Use a flashlight to check if anything is blocking or misaligning it.

Restart the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in.
  5. Turn on the printer.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
