officejet Pro 8740

My Officejet Pro 8740 certainly does not act like it's a pro. I hadn't had it more than a few months and it started squeaking, and now I'm getting paper jams every time I try to print. Help!

@debbiekaa,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Power Reset

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait at least 60 seconds
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  • Check if the error goes off and try to print
  • If the issue persists, proceed to the next step

Step 2: Clear jammed paper from the printer and clean the paper feed rollers

  • Clear jammed paper from the input tray, ink cartridge access area, output area, duplex area, the rear of the printer and the automatic document feeder.

  • Clean the rollers

  • Refer to this video for clearing jams and cleaning rollers.

I did all the steps in the video, and it is still jamming.

@debbiekaa,

What paper type and paper size are you using on the printer?

Also, check for obstructions near the carriage area.

Refer to step 2 from this document.

Let me know what happens.

I'm using 99.99% jam-free copy paper from Hammermill.  Regular weight, not heavy. The printer prints about the top 2 inches each time and the it just stops and says it's jammed. The paper doesn't really look 'jammed'.

@debbiekaa,

We can try to perform a factory reset on the printer if there are no paper jams found on the printer. (It could be a false error)

Factory reset settings of a printer differ from one printer model to another.

I will send you a private message that would have the steps to reset your printer to the factory settings.

Note: Resetting the printer to the factory settings would erase all configurations like your Wireless settings, Fax settings, and other preferences.

         You have to re-do the set up again once you perform the factory reset.

Let me know if this helps.
