The paper width guide came off of my printer, and I can't figure out how to get it back on. I've gone through the user guide, but it doesn't show it.

You're welcome.
As @DavidSMP is out of the office, I'm replying to you.
I too tried searching for a way to put the paper width guide back but could not find anything for it. I even looked into the first time printer setup guide and there is no mention of the paper guide assembly. Usually, paper guides are an integral part of the tray and cannot be disassembled/re-assembled.
Feel free to keep in touch for any further questions. Cheers! 🙂

Hi @hcgrammy,
Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the post regarding the printer’s paper guides coming off. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this.
- Did this happen when some pressure was applied while using it?
It is a physical issue with the printer. The paper guides normally don’t come off. IT is not the normal behavior of the printer. Please try to replace it the way it came off if possible. If it cannot be done, then the printer needs to be replaced by contacting HP phone support.
I am being honest about it without beating around the bush. Please follow these steps to contact HP phone support.
- HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true
- Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
- Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
- Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
- Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty. Please note if there is anything broken the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover it and it could be fee-based.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. :) Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

Thank you for your response. I don't know why the paper guide came off. I was just adding paper to the printer and it went sideways. It didn't break. If I knew how it was on before, I could put it back together. I went through the manual and couldn't find a picture of how it's supposed to look. If I could see that, I'd be able to replace it. I guess I'll keep trying.

Hello, idk if you got this fixed but here is my fix... see if your's looks like mine.??
I had this same problem with my 7500a and had mine taped into the printer for about a year, suddenly today I had issues with the paper feeding in crooked and getting jammed...
I started looking closely and saw that there is a small strip that the guide attaches too (see my photo) any how you press down on that strip and take a flat screwdriver and pry to the right at the first red circle in my photo (looks like a sideways U) and the strip will come off... then you slide the strip into the light grey guide and carfully place it back in place the rectangle openings over the rectangles in the tray....... press down again and the take the screw driver at the other hole areas and slide the strip back into position to the left it will click into place make sure it is all the way back to the left side Hope this works for you I had to slap myself for not looking closer and dealing with it taped for a year when it was so easy to fix. lol Kat

My paper width guide slipped off and I can't figure out where it belongs or how to reinsert it. The example given in this string as "Problem Solved" seems to be a different printer. And, I can't find an illustration of how it looks properly installed!
Please help. Even a photo from a colleague would help.

The only thing 3830 paper width guide drawing so far I can see on the 3830 OJ printer is this drawing that shows where the guide is on the tray I will look a little further ....I also found this video video showing paper tray with guide showing the width guide position and may help to get it back on.... This is all I could find hope it helps.

This video is excellent, and would have been very helpful if I hadn't finally figured out the answer: The gray paper width guide rides on the horizontal edge of the black element BELOW the black paper support plate that is the subject of this video. You can see the gray paper width guide already correctly inserted in place in the video. Thanks for your quick response.
