I am trying to print color photos but I'm getting some very bad banding. I'm using Professional Glossy Inkjet Photo Paper from Costco (the Kirkland brand). I never had this issue with my old HP OfficeJet Pro 8500a. You can refer to the pics below. DocFile (1).jpgDocFile (2).jpgDocFile (3).jpg

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

Does this happen while printing other documents and while making a copy?

Please perform the steps from this document from Step 7 onwards:

Thank you for the suggestions Betty. I printed out the Quality Report and it came out perfect. All the lines were straight and connected in test pattern 1 and there were no white lines in test pattern 2. Unfortunately, none of the instructions you provided have fixed the issue. Any other ideas?

Also, what is the paper size you're using?

Hi Betty,

This does not happen when I'm printing other documents. It only happens when I'm trying to print photos. I have attached a picture of the photo paper I am using. As I mentioned in my original post, I did not have this issue when printing with the same paper on my old HP Officejet Pro 8500A. Will the same photo paper not work with the 8720?

Thanks,

It looks like you were interacting with @Betty0610, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.

I'm Raj1788 & I'm at your service.

I suggest you with a different paper and check if the issue persists.

Clean the printhead

The printhead could be clogged, and you might need to clean the printhead several times to restore print quality. Use an automated tool from the control panel to clean the printhead.

   CAUTION:

Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are not installed. To avoid issues that require cleaning the printhead or that can damage the ink system, always replace ink cartridges as soon as possible, and always turn off the printer using the Power button.

  1. On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .

  2. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  3. Touch Clean Printhead, and then touch Continue.

    A test page prints.

Example of the printhead cleaning test page

  4. Examine the test page.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Clean Again to continue the next level of cleaning. Repeat these steps for the third cleaning stage, if necessary.

      NOTE:

If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, touch Done.

Clean the rollers from inside the rear of the printer

Clean the rollers behind the ink cartridge access area of the printer.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord and any other cables.

  2. Turn the printer so that the rear access door faces you.

  3. Press the two tabs inward to open the rear access door, and then remove any jammed paper.

  4. Press the two buttons on the paper path cover, and then pull the cover out of the printer.

  5. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  6. Press the cloth against the rollers, and then rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

  7. Repeat the cleaning steps on the paper path cover rollers.

  8. Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).

  9. Insert the paper path cover back into the printer.

  10. Close the rear access door.

  11. Reconnect the power cord and any other cables to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print.

Hello Raj,

Thanks for the suggestions but besides trying new paper I'm not sure it will work. This is a brand new HP 8720. There should be no issues with the printheads or the rollers. I will give it a shot but I doubt this is going to work. Additionally, this banding does not happen when I am printing on regular paper. Can you let me know what type of photo paper I should buy? I really don't want to buy more photo paper when I already have a substantial amount and the paper worked perfectly fine on my old HP 8500a. My concern is that the new paper won't make a difference and now I'm sitting on an even larger pile of photo paper that I can't use. Do you see my dilemma?

Cheers,

For the best print quality.

  • HP Photo PaperHP Premium Photo Paper, and HP Premium Plus Photo Paper are high-quality, glossy-finish or matte-finish, photo-based papers. They look and feel like photographs and can be mounted under glass or in an album. Photo papers dry rapidly and resist fingerprints and smudges. These papers are available in several photo-card sizes for printing borderless photos on compatible products.
  • HP Everyday Photo Paper, Semi-Gloss or Matte, is coated on both sides for two-sided copying. It is perfect for near-photographic reproductions and business graphics for report covers, special presentations, brochures, mailers, and calendars.
