I have an HP Photosmart 7520, when I went to turn of the printer using its front power button the front display showed "Shutting Down".  The printer never did shut down and it has been displaying the "Shutting Down" message for over an hour as of this writting.  I have seen mention of this problem on the internet, however, there noe suggestions as to how to resolve the problem.

This happend several once before months ago, so I unpluged it from the wall. That turned out to be a mistake as the printer complained about being improperly shut down and went into a message stating something like (To avoid damage, use the on button to shut down. Do not unplug the power cord or turn off the power outlet to shut down. After giving this message the printer turns off).  It continued that for weeks.

@benbi746, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I see that the printer is stuck.

The only solution to this is to wait for a couple of minutes. If it has been longer, unplug the power cable.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

If this does not help, unplug the power cable and hold the power button down for 10-15 seconds and release it. Power on the printer and check.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your computer.

If the issue persists, I'm afraid it is a printer failure.

If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Thank you much Kumar0307 for the information you've provided.  The printer was stuck in the 'Shutting Down' screen for more than 3-days but after reading your suggestion of pulling the power cord out from the rear of the printer and seconds later, plugging it back in, the printer came back to 'normal'.

I performed that procedure once before the first time that happened to me but I met with an error indicating the printer was shut down improperly and to prevent damaging it, to press the 'OK' button to shut it down.  That started a reboot and 'Press OK' loop from hell so I was afraid to do that again.

It seemed to work without issue this time with your suggestion.

Thanks again Kumar0307.
