Hello

I have two problems.  Even if I solve the first, I still may not be able to print due to the second...

Problem 1

Printer not recognising my cartridges, which have sat for a while, but are certainly not empty.

Have tried the reset cited here - nothing.

Have cleaned both cartridge heads and printer - makes no difference.

Have installed one brand new HP branded cartridge - the CMY one - no difference.

To buy the black one is another £30 and won't arrive til next week.

If the black cartridge is empty, why doesn't it say it's empty instead of saying it's not there. (I doubt it's empty as the last time I used it, it was printing high quality black, with no signs of running low)

This is a new Macbook Air - one week old, but the printer was like this earlier today before I connected it.

And it has worked with previous MBP for three years.

This image doesn't even mention my cartridges. 🤔

Problem 2

I thought I might be able to do some diagnostics via the Macbook Air at least.

"Information not available" - brilliant"Information not available" - brilliant

Printer is meant to be wireless - LOL.  Network speed is superfast fibre.  Sits like this for 10 mins, then crashes.

Quite what my network speed has to do with it when it's a wired connection...Quite what my network speed has to do with it when it's a wired connection...

Have tried connecting via USB using the HP Smart app, (which crashes more often than Andrea De Ceasaris)

"HP Smart" is not particularly..."HP Smart" is not particularly...

...but it cannot 'find the printer' despite being literally connected with a cable.

It literally is...It literally is...

This HP website is honestly bulging with out-of-date information, endless links to 404 pages - what a way to run a  business... 😒

"We are unable to detect your operating system"

I'm not surprised if you think the most recent OS is 10.9... 🙄

We were unable to detect your operating system. WHY_.png

Even if I can solve the printer cartridge problem, what to do if the Printer doesn't even recognise my Macbook?

Hi @221b,

I'd like to help!

If you have already performed the steps from the document Ink cartridge errors and the issue persists, it could be a cartridge failure.

HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One Printer driver for macOS 11 is not available from the HP website or Apple Software Update. However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.

NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
