perhaps my question is better answered for those who are trying to fix their MB and got it out of the machie. A favor would go a looong way on this one. Please read the voltage and uF value of capacitor c642 and put it into this post. I refuse the throw the printer away and I know that I can fix it. please please help.

Hi all,

I just wanted to verify that I was able to perform this fix and it did indeed fix my printer.  I purchased my capacitor from Jameco because I get parts from them often.

Also, if you're interested, I blogged about the fix on my website which you can view:

Wish you all the best!

Sincerely,

Paul,

I had the same trouble, Faults Ink System Failure, sometimes Carriage Jam and Paper Jam messages, finally after one month of this frustration which took far longer than any print job to clear by repeated turning the printer on and off, the printer finally just went into a cycle of on and off. Lucky I did a search and found your answer to this problem. I replaced the 330 uf 10v capacitor with a 330 uf 50v Cap which I obtained from Maplin code VH45 PC Elect 330uf 50v 0553 price 31p. This has saved me buying a new printer and also from having to throw away £50 of ink as I had bought all new ink in case that was the problem. I cannot thank you enough, clearly these printers have bad caps and should have been recalled if it had been a car they would have been forced to do a recall. I also replaced the battery while I had the board exposed.

Thanks again for breathing life back into my Photosmart C5180.

Kudos to pculley for posting with the specific information (including the photo) identifying the bulging capacitor!  I changed out my 613 with a 220uf and now my printer is working fine!  Please note that "bulging" seems to be a rather strong term for the "very slightly" distended end on the capacitor.  You will have to look very closely as the white indentations on the top to see that they aren't quite flat- that is what "bulging" means.  Also note that both pcully and I replaced the 613 with a 220uf rather than the 330uf of the original.  Apparently, that is close enough.  Don't throw your printers away, just change the capacitor.

Confirmed, works as stated and expected.

I matched the spec of the capacitor, radial, went 16v instead of 10v, put my horrible desoldering (then soldering) skills to work and presto, a working printer that I got for free and was new out of the box [previous owner printed 3 photos on it and then the issue with the capacitor happened].

I ordered from Parts Express on a Wednesday, received on Saturday.

Thanks again!

Replacing the 330uF (#223 on circuit board)  FIXED !!! my C5180 problems with "ink system failure, endless cycling on/off, no reponse by other means (buttons/unplugging)".

I got a 330uF - 18volts at TV repair shop, $1.00, did repair myself; repairman said the 18v was fine to use (other posters used 16v, was 10v on board). NOTE the + and - polarity when removing/replacing capacitor; advise to use low 25w iron.

All functions (copy/print/scans0 work good.

Good luck with yours!

Thanks to all who have posted about how to fix C-5180 by replacing bulged capacitors.  Replaced one 330uf 10 volt Teapo  with a 330uf 25 volt and problem was solved.  Printer now works perfectly.

Purchased six capacitors from www.badcaps.com but only used one .  Site has information about how to remove and replace capacitors, order arrived in 3 days, and total cost with shipping was about $8.00.

Bulge on capacitor was very slight but easy to tell the difference from all the flat top ones.

Thanks for the photos and the information.

I own two of the HP All in one printers in the 5100 series.  I changed the problem capacitors on both units and it fixed the rebooting problems.  If you can, buy the replacement capacitors with a higher voltage rating.  To make the fix easier you can find videos on youtube that will show you step by step how to acces the mother board.

I had the same problem with the endless looping. I found an electronics store in town, paid 2 dollars for my two capacitors, got me a soldering iron and a couple of hours later my printer is working like new!!!!!! Thank you so much to everyone who posted their experiences and problems with fixing this issue!!!!!! I could not have fixed my printer without all you posts!!!!!! Oh and HP, Thanks for nothing!!!!!!!
