Pictures are printing in slightly the wrong place and are sometimes way too large so that only part shows. They look fine in print preview. I googled and found someone had a similar problem due to an incorrect driver so I have reinstalled the software and this has not helped. It happens when printing a word document and to a lesser extent also when printing a PDF from the browser screen so it doesn't seem to be an issue with word itself. I'd be grateful for any help as I'm trying to get my Christmas letters printed. Thanks. Ann

If you've been searching, you have likely already run across many of the suggested solutions.

A review of some of the methods to control / corral / place / manage images in your document

Insert Images into a Document

Always use Insert as opposed to "copy / paste" when adding images to Word.

Always use Insert as opposed to Cut-and-Paste when adding images to a Word Document.

Details

Open Word > open the document >

Scroll to page on which one of the offending images is located

If you do not yet have a "saved" copy of the image on your computer, please create one:

Right-Click on the image > Select "Save as Picture" >

Select a Folder and name for the file (select file type .jpg) > Save

Right-Click on the image in the document >

Select Cut (or delete or whatever is available to remove the image)

Select Insert (along the top ribbon)

Select Pictures > Navigate to the folder in which you have the image file saved >

Tap on the File to select / highlight it > Click Insert

Right-Click on the image > Size and Position > Adjust / Correct as necessary > OK to save any changes / edits

Save your Word document >

File > Print > Test the results:

Select and print just one page that contains the corrected image

Insert Image in a Text Box

If the image "swells" no matter what you do,

Consider

Insert Text box

Then Insert your image inside the box

  • Use Insert (as opposed to copy / paste) when placing images into a document
  • If images will not stay contained in spite of margins:
    • Insert a Text box of the size necessary to contain the image
    • Remove the "default text" bits from the box
    • Insert the Image inside the empty text box

What else?

Image Size and Quality

Do not compress images in Word.

Word > File > Options > Advanced

Section Image Size and Quality

Set a default resolution for your images - same section

Less common...

Margin Settings – Resolution – Image Types – Text Wrap

When Images do not behave themselves, it might be due to margin settings, resolution disparity between image types (for example, .jpg, .png, .bmp files), or misuse of the way in which Text Wrap is used.

Resize Image and Objects in Word

Web Image Screen Size Default

❖ Always use Insert – never use Copy and Paste to add images to a Word document

• The appearance of inserted images is affected by screen resolution.

• Select a default target screen size.

File > Options > Advanced > scroll down > Under General > Click Web Options > tab Pictures >> Beneath Target Monitor > Select a target screen size resolution and Pixels per inch > OK > OK

NOTE: Detailed help is available in Web Options >> Click the “ ” in the menu

What else?

Adobe Reader DC – Needed Whether You Use It or Not

If you have not done so,

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

HINT:  Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software

NOTE:  Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not normally open / view / print PDF files directly from the Adobe Reader DC software.

Preferences - Correct odd / wrong-sized Image Sizes (for example, when printed from Word)

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences >

Tab Layout > Click Advanced > Switch OFF HP Real Life Technologies

Web Browsers

Web browsers tend to treat PDF files differently.

Try a different browser

OR

Rather than printing from a Web browser,

Download the content to PDF file on your system.

Open in Adobe Reader DC (or Foxit)

Print a single page of the file to determine whether the images / text will print as expected.

Thanks ever so much. I was cutting and pasting, not inserting and that has made a big difference. It's still not printing exactly as it shows in print preview, for one thing it seems to be leaving a large top margin on the first page before the picture but with a bit of fiddling about I've managed to get something that looks decent.
