Original printer power cord failed a couple weeks ago so I replaced with a new one. Within 48 hours (or maybe sooner?) the replacement cord also failed. Repeated with a third but now that is also dead.
Do I need to figure out how to replace the internal power unit?

Hi @mrbigcup,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I completely understand how concerning it is when multiple power cords fail on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw, especially when you're trying to keep your workflow uninterrupted. You're doing the right thing by asking whether the internal power unit might be the issue. Let’s walk through this together.
⚠️ What’s Likely Happening?
If three power cords have failed in quick succession, it strongly suggests:
- A fault in the internal power supply unit (PSU) of the printer.
- Possible power surges or unstable voltage from the wall outlet.
- A short circuit or overheating inside the printer.
HP printers like the M283cdw have a power protection feature that temporarily interrupts current to prevent damage during surges or instability. However, repeated cord failures indicate the protection may not be enough or the internal PSU is already damaged.
What You Should Do Now
1. Stop Using New Cords Temporarily
Avoid plugging in another cord until the printer is inspected. Repeated failures could damage the printer or pose a safety risk.
2. Try a Different Wall Outlet
Plug the printer directly into a different wall outlet (not a surge protector or extension cord) to rule out external power issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
