When attempting to print, (all is connected via Wifi confirmed), print jobs get stuck in the queue with messages:
Unable to Communicate with Printer... print job/press Cancel on printer.
Hold for Authentication - "Filter" failed.
Hold for Authentication.
If I attempt to re-enter it in queue:
A window comes up asking for user name and password (with "Guest" entered in the name slot.
I have tried using that with the passcode from the Wi-Fi Direct printout (i.e. 16223956) — no luck.
I have tried my user name and password (login) — no luck.
I have tried my admin user name and password (login) — no luck.
I have gone through all steps of the automated support tool — not luck.
Weird thing is that it will print test pages, it will scan to computer, etc., just not print.
I'm seeing "Hold for Authehtication" in my dreams...
Any ideas would be most welcome.

Thank you MKazi for your response... and I would try your suggestion... but I found a solution since my last post.
I was looking through the iterature that came with my new printer (ENVY 5664), and found a booklet that I had overlooked.
After reading it, I uninstalled the HP software in my Applications folder, then proceeded to HP's website "123.hp.com".
After a quick search on that site for my printer, and then by following the instructions, I can print, I can scan; it’s a miracle!
So, that just goes to show me: Read the directions first, and all will be a-ok! (Except for the egg on my face.) }:•)
Thank you all for the input, and I’m certain I’ll be back soon...!

Hello, @Richie333 – Greetings!
Thanks for reaching out! I’d like to be of your assistance 🙂
Going through your post, it looks like an issue with the MAC print system and the printer drivers. Try the steps below to try and reset the printer and to install the printer using the original printer drivers:
- Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
- Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
- Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
- Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
- Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
- Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
- Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.
- Click the “Add button” (+).
- Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
- Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “AirPrint” would be selected)
Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!
Good luck 🙂

Thank you for your quick response — I had tried that previously, but hoping for the best, I tried it again (exactly as you suggested). I then opened a TextEdit document, and attempted to print it. After doing page setup, and selecting Print, the same dialogue box came up asking for my "user name and password". In the name column was the word "guest".
I have tried every password (in combination with "guest".
I have tried replacing it with my user name & password.
I have tried replacing it with an admin user name & password.
None of them enable the printer to print.
When I look at the printer queue, it shows my print job, with a note that says either "paper tray is empty" (which it is not),
and /or "Hold for Authentication - "Filter" failed".
I know that my printer is on my network — it communicates with it to display ink levels, etc., and it will scan to my computer. It just won't print.
Waah! Any further suggestions are most welcome; and I thank you in advance...

Hello, @Richie333
Thanks for the update & appreciate your efforts 🙂
You can try to install the drivers here: http://apple.co/2noCAoI
This is the Apple driver for the MAC OS X. Download and install the drivers and check if that helps!
Let me know if that helps!
Cheers 🙂

Thanks again for your input... I checked, and my software (update) is completely current for both my system software, and the HP software. I also updated the firmware on my HP ENVY 5664 around 2 weeks ago; and I did a complete reinstallation of Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 less than a week ago. I am confident that all my software is up to date, and beginning to think that perhaps it's my interpretation of what's going on that is at fault.
In the past I have enjoyed the use (and quality of output image) of 5 very different HP printers; the best of which was the Photosmart 3210 AiO. All of these printers shared a common attribute: When I sent a print job to any of them, it printed, without any need for authentication. I believe that the “authentication” the ENVY 5664 requires prior to printing is the real problem. I can’t seem to escape it.
Perhaps it is a set-up/programming error on my part? Surely there must be a way to be able to print a page of text or a photo, without having to enter an authorization password. I am the only person that ever uses my computer & printer.
Or is this what “security” has evolved into?
I just want to print. Thank you for any additional ideas...

- Click the drop-down menu next to Use or Print Using and click on Select Printer Software.
- Select the ENVY 5660 series from the list.
- Click OK to confirm your selection and add the printer, then try printing using the configured print queue.
I hope this helps Let me know. Good luck! 🙂

You're welcome. 🙂
You've been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills, remarkable patience and great attitude. Kudos to you for that.
Great job on getting the printer back on track. I'm glad to hear that it is able to print and scan.
