I'm trying to print mailing lablels using Avery 8660 templates but the paper options only offer photo paper. This has not happened before and I can't find a way to change any of the settings

A warm welcome to HP Forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
The best way to print Avery labels is by using the tools and templates offered by the label company. You may download the Avery label templates from here

You can also use Mac contact management or word processing apps to print labels:

HP Photo Creations: This free software installs with many HP printer driver packages, or can be downloaded for free at HP Photo Creations Printing Software. Search the Mac for "photo creations", and then click HP Photo Creations in the results. In the top menu bar, click Business, and then click Address Labels.

Mac Contacts or Pages apps: Go to Contacts: Print labels, envelopes, and lists or Pages Help for Mac: Print envelopes, labels, and business cards for steps to print labels.

Your information was not helpful as you apparently do nott understand my question:

I wish to print Labels; I am not printing photos.

I wish to print in the label format on regular paper to proof-read, and then print on the mailing label stock. I am using the Avery template 8660 to print, which I know how to use and have used before. Previousy the options offered in the drop-down Presets menu included either "Black and White" or "Black and White - Draft".

Now the only options offered in the drop-down menu are ALL photo related and are limited to:

  • "Black and White Photo on Glossy Paper - Fine"
  • "Photo on Glossy Paper"
  • "Photo on Glossy Paper - Fine"
  • "Photo on Plain Paper"
  • "Photo on Plain Paper - Fine"

How can I return to the options of either "Black and White" or "Black and White - Draft"?  Printing with the Photo settings uses too much ink and takes too long.

It sounds like an issue with the printer driver installed on your Mac. Removing existing printer driver and then setting up the printer with Apple AirPrint may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:

Please ensure that the printer is up to date with its firmware and Mac is up to date with it's software. If you are unsure you may use the links below to update the printer and Mac software:

Update printer firmware

Update software on Mac

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

6.) Try to print.

Keep me posted!
