Hi @mikebrennan1,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 3830 leaving a line down the middle when using the automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning or copying, it usually indicates that there may be dirt or debris on the scanner glass or the ADF rollers.
Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and clean the printer:
Steps to Clean the ADF and Scanner Glass
Turn Off the Printer: Make sure the printer is turned off and unplugged before cleaning.
Open the ADF: Lift the ADF cover to access the scanner glass and rollers.
Clean the Scanner Glass:
- Locate the long, thin strip of glass that runs alongside the main scanner glass. This is where the ADF scans the document.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to clean this strip. Ensure you do not apply too much liquid; excess can damage the printer.
- Wipe the glass gently to avoid scratches.
Clean the ADF Rollers:
- Look for rubber rollers inside the ADF. These are responsible for pulling the documents through.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or a mild cleaning solution to gently wipe the rollers. Rotate the rollers as you clean them to ensure all surfaces are wiped down.
Check for Debris: While the ADF cover is open, check for any paper debris or dust inside the ADF. Remove anything that could be obstructing the mechanism.
Close the ADF: Once everything is clean and dry, close the ADF cover securely.
Test the Printer: Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Try scanning or copying again to see if the issue persists.
