HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I had Windows 10 Home, upgraded to Windows 11, and then switched back to Windows 10 Home.  Now I cannot print.  I get message:  Printer Configuration Error 0x80004005.  I have removed the printer, reinstalled it, turned everything off and back on, and it still won't work!  I can scan from it but cannot print.

@CKAUFMAN1

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,

I see that you are getting a CONFIGURATION PROBLEM 0x80004005 error.

  • Are you able to make a copy of your printer?
  • Have you tried printing from a different application?
  • Is your printer working with a USB connection?

Meanwhile: Reset the printer

  • In some cases, removing the ink cartridges and resetting the printer can clear the error message.
  • Turn on the printer.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer. If your printer has a network or wireless connection, leave it connected.
  • Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet or power strip.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to a wall outlet.

  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  • The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  • Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
  • If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
  • If you disconnected the USB cable, reconnect it to the rear of the printer.
  • Try to print.

Also, uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on the Drivers tab.
  • Look for an HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps, try updating the printer firmware and check if it helps.
