While in the middle of printing, my Printer stopped working and the display contains only verticle lines. It is unable to turn off with the "off" switch. When unplugged and replugged the display screen works long enough to tell me I turned it off inappropriately. After chosing "OK" it goes back to the verticle lines.

I was able (by myself) to correct the verticle lines. After reloading the "firmware" and replacing all the ink, nothing worked. However, I believe the lines were the result of damage done to the printhead. The only way to remove the lines was to unplug and replug. When the message comes up that it was inappropriately shut down, DO NOT hit "OK." Instead, turn the printer off with the print button. I reboted the computer then turned the printer on. I had to clean the Printhead 3 times before I got all the colors. I removed the printhead cartridge and carefully cleaned it. After replacing it, I have been able to print in color, although the reds are still not what they were. The price of a new printhead cartridge is not worth the cost. We will probably have to replace this printer even though it is only 1 1/2 yrs old.

I downloaded the firmware update. When I tried to run it, the computer could not find the printer. Error "USB device not recognized" The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
While the printer display appears to be on (with verticle lines showing), the on/off button is not lit. The button will not work to turn it off or on.
Before I started my last print project, I checked the ink and there appeared to be plenty according to the display. After this problem occured, I checked the ink and the black appears to be totally empty. I never received any message to replace it but did so (after it was "broken") with no change. Could a dry ink cartridge have caused this?? I did change out the USB cord and did change it to a different USB port. It is connected to a desktop computer but I access it wirelessly from 2 laptops.

Perform a power reset
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector and printer.
- Turn on the printer.

Sandy, I tried hard boot but it only works if you do not press "OK" when it tells you that you turned it off incorrectly.
Thanks for your answer - wish I had figured this out earlier. Just add NO NOT PRESS "OK". Then turn the printer off using the correct button and then turn it on again.
Before the hard boot, the ON/OFF button was not available. After pressing "OK" it was not available again.
