HP sent me a replacement 301 XL printer cartridge. The printer will not accept it and still requests it be replaced.

As I understand, your printer will not accept ink cartridge.
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
Was it working earlier?
What is the error message?
Are you subscribed to Instant Ink plan?
Let's try troubleshooting steps from the link:
Step 1: Make sure the cartridges are compatible
Make sure the newly installed cartridges are compatible with your printer and that they are unmodified, genuine HP cartridges.
Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.

Go to HP SureSupply.

If necessary, select your country/region.

Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.
You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.

If the cartridge is compatible, continue with the steps in this document.

If the cartridge is not compatible, skip to the stepin this document to identify the cartridge to replace, and then replace the cartridge.
Step 2: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges
