Whenever I turn on my OfficeJet Pro 6978 you can hear it trying to pull paper but it never grabs anything. I then get the error: 0x6100004a. I have followed all of the recommended instructions around cleaning the wheels, taking off and replacing the cover, everything, and I get the same issue every time. In addtion, a lot of the fixes say take out the ink cartridges but when I open the top part of the printer the ink cartridges do not move and stay stuck on the side.
This printer is just over a year old so I am hoping there is a fix.

Hi @brettburesh,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding error code on your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Hard Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
- Remove all paper from the input tray.
- Open the ink cartridge access door and check for any obstructions.
- Manually move the ink carriage (if possible).
- If it does not move, proceed to the next step.
- Wait 3-5 minutes, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Manually Check the Ink Carriage
Since your ink cartridges are stuck on one side, try:
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
- Try gently moving the ink carriage to the center.
- If it is jammed, inspect for paper debris or obstructions.
- Firmly press down on the ink cartridges, then release them.
- Reconnect the printer and turn it back on.
Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
- Turn off the printer and remove all paper.
- Open the rear access door or paper path cover.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the rollers.
- Let them dry completely, reload the paper, and test printing.
Factory Reset the Printer
- On the printer display, navigate to:
- Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Printer
- Select Restore to Factory Defaults
- Restart the printer and try printing again.
Check for Firmware Updates
If the issue started after a firmware update, reinstall or roll back the firmware:
- Visit HP’s official website (HP Software & Drivers)
- Enter your printer model (OfficeJet Pro 6978)
- Download and install the latest firmware update.
let me know how it goes.
