Welcome to HP Support Community, @rdk573

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

1. Perform a Hard Reset

Turn the printer on.

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall.

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug it back into a wall outlet only.

Turn the printer on and check if the error clears.

2. Check Scanner Movement
Lift the scanner lid and power the printer on.
Watch the scanner bar.

If it does not move, the mechanism is jammed or the motor has failed.

If it tries to move but stops, something is obstructing it.

3. Look for Obstructions
Inspect the scanner track for:

Paper pieces

Dust

A broken plastic part

Anything stuck along the edges

Remove any debris you find.

4. Check Scanner Bar Smoothness
Turn the printer off.
Try gently moving the scanner bar by hand.
It should slide smoothly along the rail.
If it feels stiff, lightly clean the metal rail with a cloth.
If needed, apply a tiny amount of light machine oil (not WD-40) on the rail.

5. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

On the printer screen, press the Back button four times to enter the Support Menu.

Go to “Resets Menu.”

Select “Semi-Full Reset.”
This will restart the printer and reinitialize the scanner system.

6. If the Scanner Light Does Not Turn On or Flickers
This usually means a hardware failure involving:

Scanner motor

Scanner lamp

Scanner assembly controller

In this case, the scanner assembly needs replacement. For this model, the part is not user-replaceable, and repair often costs more than replacing the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
