Hello,

I have HP OfficeJet Pro 6978. Lately, it has been causing a Printer Failure Error. I have done all the troubleshooting. resetting, unplugging, taking the cartridges out, and installing again. I kept it unplugged for 60 seconds and then turned it ON, but none of the solutions worked out for me.

Hi @arslan90 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the Printer Failure Error on the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 often indicates a hardware-related issue, such as a problem with the printhead, cartridges, or internal electronics. Since you've already attempted basic troubleshooting, here are some additional steps to try:

1. Check the Error Code

  • If an error code accompanies the message, note it down. It may provide more specific details about the issue.

2. Perform a Full Printer Reset

  1. Unplug the printer while it is powered on.
  2. Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (bypass any surge protector or power strip).
  4. Turn it back on.

3. Clean the Electrical Contacts

  • Cartridge Contacts:
    1. Power off the printer and remove the cartridges.
    2. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper contacts on the cartridges.
    3. Let them dry for a few minutes.
  • Printhead Contacts:
    1. Open the printhead latch and carefully remove the printhead (if removable).
    2. Gently clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Outdated firmware can sometimes cause errors.
  • Download and install the latest firmware for the OfficeJet Pro 6978 from the HP Support website.

5. Run Printhead Cleaning (via the Printer Menu or Software)

  • If you can access the printer menu or the HP Smart app, run a printhead cleaning cycle.

6. Check for Blockages or Jams

  • Open the printer and inspect for any small pieces of paper or debris that may be obstructing the printhead's movement

7. Test the Printer Without Cartridges

  • Remove all cartridges and close the printer lid. Turn the printer on.
  • If the error persists without cartridges installed, it may indicate a problem with the printhead or internal electronics.

8. Reinstall the Printer Drivers

  • Uninstall the printer from your system:
    1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click on your printer and select Remove Device.
  • Download and reinstall the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
