Hello,

In my first post / enquiry, I had replaced my printer fuser assembly then upon starting it up noted that the control panel display remained powered OFF whilst the printer was turned ON. I found that a ribbon was disconnected, upon reconnection the control panel display lit up satisfactorily but this lead to other problems:

The calibration process does not proceed even when manually requested.

All printing is not functioning.

Then I found out the error 54.14.00 Colour Plane Registration Sensor Error.

What connector could be responsible for this ? How to get the printer functioning ?

This thing seems to be unworkable passing from one issue to another one. It's mad.

Anyone with suggestions to help ?

Thanks & Best Regards,

Patrick

Have you performed a full calibration on the device? That may clear the error.

This error is the density sensor that is mounted in the front of the printer under the transfer belt.

Connector is callout #1

RM2-7399-000CN is the replacement sensor assembly

Hi !

First of all I would like to thank you for your detailed response; this is very kind of you.

Perhaps I should provide a little background to this case:

Of course I tried calibration and a test page as well as printing maintenance reports but this does not work and the printer prints a cleaning page which comes out perfectly clean and blank then it get into a vicious cycle so either I repeat or hide / later... I have tried the Print & Scan Doctor but this tool does not seem to do much as it indicated all healthy but did not detect the incorrect print. I was expecting a computer like diagnostics where the printer individual components are checked one at a time for n minutes, a print is done then user feedback collected, etc, etc... but nothing at all. Also it seems the Smart Diagnostic & Fix does not work and why are there two tools rather than a single but more comprehensive tool ? Anyway, I am rather disappointed with these diagnostics tools.

The printer was functioning correctly up until the pressure drum became contaminated which led to all printouts to have additional impressions along the page in a repeating pattern as the drum rotated. We pursued using the printer _ working perfectly fine aside of the super-imposed impressions _ that is until a paper jam when a colleague of mine just made the mistake of pulling the paper energetically from one side thus tearing it in the fuser assembly which is unrecoverable unless the fuser is removed and serviced...

As the pressure drum was damaged rather than service the fuser assembly, I ordered and received two new fusers assemblies and installed one with the issue of the control panel not lighting up thereafter which was linked to a loose ribbon.

It is the first time I dis-assemble a printer and the as the plastic claddings are clipped on and rather difficult to remove _ I cut my fingers twice with this _, I put that printer on its sides, upside down, etc... on several occasions and I am now wondering if this could nor have led some toner dust to contaminate one or more of the printer sensors rather than damaging. The issue is that I am offshore in a remote area and ordering anything would take weeks...

Also, I have not put back the sides plastic cladding but I am also wondering if there are any sensors which could prevent the printer from operating normally when these are removed... I have no idea.

Would you suggest that I remove and clean the transfer belt with alcohol as well as the density sensor ? Or should I gently wipe off the density sensor with a tissue ?

I am looking for your further advice.

Thanks again for your kind help.

Best Regards,

Patrick

I have run these printers with no panels at all on and it does not affect basic operation. Did you have the transfer belt out of the printer? If so I would check all the connections and wires carefully to make sure that the sensor wires have not been damaged. The symptoms you describe are fairly consistent with the color plane sensor not working properly. It would be a real coincidence if they failed at the same time as you replaced the fuser, but I have learned over the years to not discount multiple component failures.

Hi !

Many thanks for your kind response.

Great that these can be tested without the side panels as these are annoying and a pain to remove / put back.

On my way to try to access the density sensor, I tried to remove the transfer belt assembly but it did not slide out for some reason. It could move very little but could not slide out at all. I had unlatched it pushing down the two little white levers fully. These are on the side below the three motors. I also had removed the rear door assembly including the paper green / black track guide (removing shaft white clip), the little plastic cover to the rear door switch lever and belt connections, the top black plastic plate, the two retaining screws... It is spotlessly clean, I took care not to touch the mylar belt itself. Are there other places to look at to free the transfer belt assembly ? I followed a video but it was not the same printer but similar so the 479 may have other attachments...

Upon powering up it went through calibration for a while then I got into the usual blank page endless cycle with Misprint/Later/Jobs/Cancel. The page is not hot / warn as if the fuser was on by the way. It does not cancel a job so rapidly; it looks interminable after 10 minutes and still "Cancelling" but perhaps that's normal...

One thing to mention which I found rather strange as well as it may a concern but I am not sufficiently familiar with these things to say more:

When I tried rotating the pressure drum with the large white gear I found it quite stiff vs the 86,000 prints damaged and paper jammed original which is really smooth. Our IT man told me the two fuser units I received are genuine HP... I did not expect such stiffness to rotate. I cannot rotate it with two fingers, should it be so stiff to move ?

Oh, and I have tested the scanner from the glass and from the feeder, both are fully functional.

I am looking forward to your advices.

Thanks & Best Regards,

Patrick
