I return to the north each year in the spring. I have attempted to prep my Hp inkjet printers for the 6 months of non -use..apparently not succesfully..as i have had to replace printers twice in the last 4 years. I have a brand new HP 8710..and I want to learn the correct way to treat the printer..so when I return to the south in Fall 2018..i can count on getting my printer back up and running. PLEASE HeLP !

Hi,
The best advice that I can gove is to keep the printer connected to a power outlet and turned on. This way the printer will be able to perform the neccesary print head maintanence that keeps the print head in good health.

Hello Bill,
Google for "how to store ink cartridges when not in use." There's all sorts of links. Can you take the printer with you either in the car or as checked baggage. Can some friend, associate, neighbor take the printer into their place and run a diagnostic page monthly.
At which location do you need all the features of the 8710. Keep it there and buy an inexpensive one for the other location. The 5660, 5540 series, etc. use a black and a tricolor cartridge that have the printhead as part of the cartridge. Possibly less problems than your 8710. Some of those series have a document feeder tray on top.
Don't you have the same problem up north. Will it damage the printer not having cartiriges loaded.
I am not looking for a reply, just searching for answers for queries. I am not an HP employee. Good luck.

- If opened supplies must be stored outside of the product, place them (nozzles up) in a plastic tub with an airtight lid.
- Some cartridges have an orange cap that is twisted off to open. ...
- Place a damp cloth or paper in the tub.
- Do not use plastic bags.

The next link is about the printhead. It likely could clog and dry out.
