For years, I have used third party ink cartridges on my HP Officejet Pro 8710 but it has now started displaying error messages while printing. The message reads that 'This printer was not designed to use continuous ink systems. To resume printing, remove continuous ink system and install original HP (or compatible cartridges).' I have followed the instruction of cleaning the cartridge electrical contact and powering on/off in attempt to clear the message. This has not cleared the problem. I read on another post that genuine HP cartridges were also installed but that did not fix the problem - has anyone solved this problem?

Hi Sandy
Thanks for your reply. I have followed the trouble-shooting guide with the current cartridge set, which has not solved the problem. I will purchase HP branded cartridges, install and hope this will solve the problem.

I recently purchased a 8025e from Amazon. It came with HP ink cartridges. They lasted past the 30 day window where I could return the printer. Installed 3rd party ink cartridges & I get "Non-HP Chip Detected". According to their tech support I'm trying to use "fake" ink cartridges. What a load of stuff!! Had I known the printer would be disabled if I installed 3rd party cartridges, I never would've purchased the printer in the first place. Tech support guy insisting printer is not disabled - if it won't work, then it's disabled!! Tech support guy says if you put diesel in your gasoline engine, would it work - the analogy makes no sense at all - if I buy a vehicle, when it comes time for oil change I can put any compatible oil filter in the vehicle, doesn't have to be vehicle brand - almost always 3rd party brand. Somehow 3rd party printer cartridges are a security threat (I think I can handle my own security, thanks anyway HP). No more HP for me. Last part of rant - tried to use several variations of "NoHP4me" as my screen name, their system wouldn't allow it, guess no negative truth on this site. This is a horrible requirement that is probably published somewhere pages deep in the manual or somewhere in the pages & pages of online content. Any suggestions for a good printer manufacturer that puts the customer wants ahead of trying to squeeze as many nickels out of me as they can?

Hi Lex-Mark
I had used compatible cartridges with this printer for years without problem. Also the compatible cartridges I had installed printed without problem up to the point I reported the problem and there was no message requiring the cartridges were out of ink and needed changing. Very strange, as I had not performed any printer firmware updates either. My cartridge supplier was very accommodating and I replaced the compatibles with HP branded, which of course solved the problem. However, I agree with you, that the product should not stop working because the rip off priced branded consumables were not installed. I will be very wary of HP products when I eventually replace the printer.
