macOS 10.14 Mojave

Our HP Jet Pro 8028 printer shows an error code :71.02.4A after one  successful print job this am. Checked the suggested solutions on the HP Community site, e.g  disconnecting power to the printer etc.. Same code appears. The printer carriage appears to be clear of any debris, but the print head will not center, and is stuck on the right side?

Also, When I looked at firmware updates via my setup menu, it indicates no new updates, with an indicated that this feature was locked by the installer?  Any suggestions, will be appreciated!

@Keywester1, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your HP Jet Pro 8028 printer. Let's try a few steps to resolve the error code 71.02.4A and the firmware update issue.

Error Code 71.02.4A

Power Reset:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and then to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer.

Check for Obstructions (again)

Even tiny paper fragments, ink buildup, or debris on the right side carriage park area can prevent movement.

  • Open the access door.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the far right side where the printhead is parked.
  • Use a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the area, especially the wipe station and any ink buildup.

Check the Carriage Belt and Path

  • Gently move the print carriage left and right. If it's stuck, do not force it.
  • Look for any obstructions in the belt or rail, and check if the encoder strip (thin, transparent strip behind the carriage) is damaged or dirty.

Clean the Ink Cartridge and Printhead Contacts:

  • Open the cartridge access area and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  • Remove the cartridges and clean the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  • Clean the contacts inside the printhead.
  • Reinsert the cartridges into their slots and close the access area.

Firmware Update Issue

If the firmware update feature is locked by the installer, you might need to unlock it:

  • Access the Printer's Control Panel:
    • On the printer's control panel, go to the Setup menu (gear icon).
    • Look for the Printer Update options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
