Hi, my printer has started to continuously print a stream of status report pages. The only way to stop it is to pull the plug.  When I plug it back in starts printing again. It does print normally when you send a print job to it but it then starts printing status reports again.  I've no idea what has started this off and it first happened in the middle of the night. When I plugged it back in it was okay for a couple of days then it did it again at night. Now the fault seems to be pretty much continuous. For info, it's on an instant ink account and the printer has operated faultlessly for a few years now.  Any advice would be much appreciated as I don't really want to buy a new printer if I can avoid it. Cheers

Hi there @rottenflyer, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

I understand your HP printer is repeatedly printing status report pages, even when not prompted, and only stops when unplugged. This can be frustrating, especially when the printer otherwise works fine for regular print jobs.

Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

This clears any residual memory and may stop the loop.

Check for Stuck Print Jobs or Status Reports

  • Open the HP Smart app or go to Devices and Printers on your computer.
  • Cancel any pending or stuck print jobs.
  • If a status report or network configuration page is queued, remove it.

Disable Automatic Reports (if enabled)

Some HP printers have settings that automatically print status or diagnostic reports under certain conditions.

  • Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Find your printer’s IP address from the control panel.
    • Enter the IP address in a web browser to open the EWS.
  • Navigate to Settings > Reports or Web Services.
  • Disable any automatic report printing options like:
    • Status Reports
    • Network Configuration Reports
    • Web Services Reports

Check for Firmware Updates

Outdated firmware can cause unexpected behavior.

Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

If the issue persists, a factory reset may help.

  • On the printer control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm the reset and allow the printer to reboot.

⚠️ Note: This will remove custom settings including Wi-Fi credentials and Instant Ink setup. You may need to reconfigure your printer afterward.

Use Diagnose & Fix in the HP app to repair common printing issues (Windows, macOS) | HP® Support

Thanks for this. I had tried everything you suggested and nothing worked so I did a factory reset and that appears to have cleared the problem. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice. Cheers
