HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

Following a recent firmware update, the printer started to display 79 Service error message. I had to reboot the printer and this error came more and more often. Then after few days, after a reboot, the 49 service error appeared and the printer constantly reboot in a loop. It's impossible to access the menu or anything else as after the reboot, it display the "49 service error" and then it reboot again... in a loop.

Checking some of the posts, I saw that many people encounter exactly the same issue on this specific Printer HP Color LaserJet Pro M281 after the firmware upgrade.

I need HP solve this issue ASAP.

HP is aware of the issue, I have seen no update yet as to how long this will take. If you have a look around here you will see you are not alone in this. A couple of users here have taken it upon them selves to replace the formatter which resolves the issue but personally I do not think users should have to go that route.

I truly hope they get onto this sooner rather than later. This is a most disagreeable situation that they have put us in.

I have the same issue with my printer.

Hello,

I have the same issue. I followed the advice of an HP employee on this forum to reset the NVRAM on the printer (as it erroneously refused to work with newly installed original HP toner cartridges thinking they were fake). Now it's stuck in an endless 49 Service Error loop. Is there any resolution as of yet?

thanks!

Turn the printer power off, and then on. Power off and disconnect any external accessories, fax cards, and third-party USB drives. If this clears the error, reconnect each component one at a time, and then print a Configuration page after each component is replaced.

Thanks for the response @Johnharper241 - please note I've tried following everything in HP's troubleshooting guides. Based on other threads I've seen, it turns out this is a deep issue with a late October 2022 HP firmware for this specific model (HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw)  essentially bricks the printer - requiring a full printer replacement. Given the broad number of impacted printers of this model in the market and what appears to be HP's lack of systematic, customer friendly approach to resolving this issue, it seems there's a class action lawsuit brewing.

Hello,

I found a post to solve this issue.

When the printer goes into a continuous reboot, there's a way to enter in a download mode by short-circuiting  2 pad on the electroni board. Then plug your usb and then uload a "working" firmware into the printer. It works perrfectly for me and my printer is back in life 🙂
