Has this HP compatibility issue been solved?
I am having the same issue trying to get an HP P1102W to print via USB after upgrading the machine and OS from XP to Windows 7. The Print preferences WILL NOT save "Letter" paper-size print setting and A4 is the only paper size that appears. I can get it to print once as Letter, but then it reverts back to A4 everytime. I have set the paper size to Letter in the Control panel, and in the software (Microsoft Dynamics GP-Great Plains) in 2 different places, but it means that everytime the user needs to print cheques, she has to set the paper-size in 3 places.
I can't get into it via the Web GUI as it is connected via USB. Any suggestions or links to a solution would be much appreciated before the user kills me...

We have dozens of these printers, previously on XP now Win7 and I have run into this problem for the first time today.
Removed/reinstalled, re-added, changed regions, rebooted - nothing changes the default from A4 to Letter. I have the exact same printer and image on my machine, and mine is letter. Switched printers to see if the setting is in the printer, and it's not. The problem stayed with the computer. So it's in the HP driver - it's pulling the paper size from somewhere and not updating when any changes are made.

So I have Windows7 64bit and a P1102W printer and I have the same issue of having the "Paper Available" stuck as A4. Finally after lots of trial and error I have found a solution:
Install the HP drivers.
Go to Device and Printers.
Remove the P1102W printer (do not uninstall!!!)
Add a printer, select local printer.
pick a USB port.
do NOT select "use existing driver"
Pick a new driver from the list.
finish.
Now the new printer will default to Letter size!!!! (assuming all your regions are set to USA)

I've fixed it on two machines now, as per someone elses suggestion. The installer obviously looks at some region setting, sets the paper size then never changes it again (even the web gui for the printer doesn't work).
So, uninstall printer.
Change format to USA in ctrl panel -> region/language
Location to United States
Change Keyboards -> Default input language -> US
Administrative -> Change system local -> United States.
Then install the printer/software
Should be letter, using the proper HP P1102w
Change regions back.
I think I only rebooted after software removed and it worked.
HP -> It's your installer setting something that can't be changed later. Needs to be fixed.

SAME PROBLEM.
Just got an HP Laserjet P1102w for our office to print cheques.
From one computer it has defaulted to Letter sized and I have problems printing.
From the other computer on the network it defaults to A4, and no matter what I do I can't get it to actually print at letter size and instead it squashes all my printouts to A4 size.
I have changed my regional settings to USA then unistalled everything, rebotted, reinstalled, rebooted and tried again to no avail. I have tried going into the printer preferences and changing the settings into a new Untitled profile, but they have no effect. I have tried being sneaky and saving the printer setting changes to 'Defaults' but it still didn't work.
I tried calling tech support and they insist it's a Microsoft Word issue and won't do anything. Absolutely useless.
HP needs to put out a patch immediately. This is way too old of an issue and way too simple of a problem to leave unadressed. You just have to patch your driver software to allow the default paper size to actually be changed. That's it! Please fix it so this printer can actually be used like it ought to be.
Please confirm that the issue is being worked on. Someone who actually knows the drivers on the back end should be able to fix this quickly and eliminate hours upon hours of your clients' wasted time.

I just had to do this again and I missed a step above. On the "Administrative -> Change System Local" you MUST click the copy settings button and copy settings to Welcome Screen and New User Accounts. I skipped this step and it did not work. Redid it again with the copy and it's back to letter.
Still INSANE that this process is even required at all, but whatever.
Uninstall printer.
Change format to USA in ctrl panel -> region/language
Location to United States (and default location)
Change Keyboards -> Default input language -> US
Administrative -> Change system local -> United States.
Copy Settings -> Welcome and New User
Restart Computer
Install the printer/software
Should be letter, using the proper HP P1102w

Hi @CP44,
Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query. I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that you are facing issues with your HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer wherein it defaults to A4 paper size only.
I suggest that try updating the firmware from the link: LJP1100_P1560_P1600_FW_Upgrade_Security-20150114.exe
If the issue persists, then you may try installing the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 (64-bit) from the link: http://hp.care/2vx3gu7
Let me know how this works.
You have a good day ahead.

I have exactly the same issue for my HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 and all other previous printers. I have to manually change the settings from A4 to Letter every time I need to print (in 4 different locations on my PC).
My System Locale is set to Europe as otherwise some fonts on the computer cannot be properly showed and I cannot change this thing as otherwise the whole system would be a mess.
Any chance to change some settings in HP registry or somewhere else (or let your HP programmers know for future updates) that the printer should not take the settings from your System Locale and overide the Current Location settings.
I am having this issue for the last 15 years and kinda fed up with it. It is only for PC, Mac doesn't have such issues.

I have an easy and quick solution for all of you that hasn't been mentioned:
Go to Printers&Scanners -> Click on your printer -> click on manage
-> click printer properties -> go to the tab "device settings"
-> now change the "Form To Tray Assignment" "Printer Auto select" to A4 or letter, whatever you prefer.
-> Reboot your system! 🙂
Every time you print something, the chosen format will be applied, you don't have to change it anymore, nor do you have to de-install or re-install your drivers.
I signed up on HP just to type this answer, i hope you find it useful. The registration process with the password requirements and multiple captchas is just painful. ☹️
