After the last firmware update, the printer had pulled and installed about a week ago, in cups the printer was shown as disabled, though reachable over WLAN and cups talking with the printer, as could be seen in a network trace.
I had added the printer via the cups admin page on port 631. It was automatically found as Color LaserJet Pro 4302fdw driverless with a one of these weird names, that are resolved via avahid (the bonjour stuff ...). Before the firmware upgrade everything was fine. Afterward i have seen the printer and cups communicating. The last package came from the printer and was of this mDNS kind. Immediately after this package arrived at cups, it stated the printer disconnected.
My workaround: I added the printer manually configuring it with ipps printing protocol and manually selecting the appropriate driver. It works, but probably for a normal user on Linux this is a bit tough to do. Aside from my opinion, that still, after >25 years of Linux, it is still not usable by normal users. Anyway. Probably HP wants to fix that address resolution stuff.

Hi @afluegel,
Thank you for your response,
It sounds like the firmware update for your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4302fdw has caused issues with CUPS' automatic configuration. The issue seems to be related to mDNS/Bonjour name resolution, which is not uncommon with networked printers after firmware changes.
Since you have found a manual workaround, here are a few steps you might take to resolve the issue:
Manual Configuration via IPP:
- Open the CUPS web interface by navigating to http://localhost:631 in your browser.
- Go to the Administration tab and select Add Printer.
- Choose Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) or Internet Printing Protocol (https) depending on your setup.
- Enter the printer's IP address or hostname followed by /ipp/print (e.g., ipps://<printer_ip>/ipp/print).
- Select the appropriate driver from the list or provide a PPD file if available.
Check for Updates:
- Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes subsequent updates address issues introduced in previous versions.
- Update CUPS to the latest version to ensure compatibility with recent firmware changes.
Adjust mDNS Settings:
- Sometimes the mDNS/Bonjour service can conflict after updates. Restart the avahi-daemon service:
sudo systemctl restart avahi-daemon
Alternative Driver Installation:
- Use the HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) drivers, which might provide better support:
sudo apt-get install hplip
hp-setup
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
