officejet pro 6978

I have an officejet pro 6978, it keeps showing printer failure 0x6100004a. I have turned off and back on the printer, have unplugged it from the back and the wall and waited a few minutes before plugging back in. I still get the error plus a paper jam notice when there is no paper jam. I am feed up with this and trying to get work done. Is there anything I can do besides replace it? It is no longer under warranty.

Thank you!!!!

@SLINDY,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand you are getting "0x6100004a" error on your new HP OfficeJet printer.. Don’t worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I’ll need a few more details.

Have you recently made any changes on the printer before the issue started?

Have you checked for any obstructions inside the printer?

Are you able to move the carriage manually?

Have you tried to clean the paper feed rollers?

In the meantime, let’s try these steps here:

Let's start off by updating the printer firmware. If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to install the latest firmware update on your printer from our HP support website.  Once done, restart the printer.

For more details on how to update, please use this link: HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to do a hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP OfficeJet Pro 6900 Printers - Paper Jam Error

I could not move the ink cartridges at all, no recent changes. I've tried hard reset, no paper anywhere. I finally called support which was on hold for 28 min. But they figured out my print head was broke and cannot replace it so I'm now in search of new printer.
