HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One - N911n

I replaced one of my color cartridges (yellow). It made a huge clunking sound when I shut the cover and it went into its installation mode. Thereafter it said there was a problem with another color and to replace it. I opened the cover and saw that the cyan cartridge was popped out of place. I put it back in (thinking I had somehow caused it to eject when I replaced the yellow cartridge). Thereafter it went into installation mode again and then came up with the following error: Printer Failure - There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP.

I, of course, turned off the printer and turned it back and am still receiving this message. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a way to contact HP. So I'm trying this route. Help!

Hi @LeahC20,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One is experiencing an issue with the ink system after replacing the cartridges. This kind of "Printer Failure" message can sometimes be resolved with a few troubleshooting steps. Here's what you can try:

1. Check Cartridges and Printhead:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove all the ink cartridges.
  • Check the cartridges for any damage, debris, or ink leaks. Ensure that all the cartridges are installed correctly and fully clicked into place.
  • Inspect the printhead area for any ink buildup or misalignment. If it seems dirty, you can clean the electrical contacts of the printhead and cartridges using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.

2. Reinstall Cartridges and Power Cycle:

  • After cleaning, reinstall the cartridges carefully, ensuring each one is securely in place.
  • Close the cartridge door and plug the printer back in. Turn it back on and see if the error persists.

3. Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on again.

4. Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Sometimes, firmware issues can cause problems like this. If the printer turns on without error after the previous steps, check if there is a firmware update available by visiting the HP support page for your printer.

5. Re-seat or Replace the Printhead (if necessary):

  • If the issue persists, the printhead might need attention. For some models, you can remove and reinstall the printhead.
  • Follow the instructions in your printer manual to remove the printhead and clean the electrical contacts.
  • If the printhead is damaged or cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, you might need to replace the printhead.

6. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • If you have access to a computer, you can download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This tool can diagnose and fix printing issues, including ink system problems.
