Hi @maireg47,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating this is. Installing brand-new cartridges and getting an “empty” error feels like hitting a dead end. Let’s go through the most effective steps for your HP OfficeJet 8610:

Step 1: Check Cartridge Installation

  1. Remove the cartridge.
  2. Make sure the orange protective tape on the copper contacts and ink nozzle is completely removed.
  3. Reinsert firmly until it clicks.

Step 2: Clean Electrical Contacts

  • Power off the printer.
  • Remove the cartridge.
  • Gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry and reinstall.

Step 3: Update Printer Firmware

Step 4: Reset the Printer

  1. With the printer on, unplug the power cord.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug back in and power on.

Step 5: Verify Cartridge Authenticity

  • Use the HP App or the printer menu to check cartridge status.
  • If it says “Non-HP” or “Counterfeit,” the printer may block usage.

If Still Showing Empty

  • Try another new cartridge if available (to rule out a defective chip).
  • If the issue persists, the cartridge sensor or carriage assembly may need service.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
