HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows XP

I have an HP 8710 printer that has stopped printing properly.

Each line seems to overprint the top line, leaving one jumble of overprinted characters across of the top of the page, with nothing else on the page.

The scanner function works,

Diagnostic tools say there is a serious problem, and the best bet is to uninstall the software, and reinstall with the CD (which I don't have one of), or download the most current Full Features software from HP Customer Care.

Pronlem went away after running a system reinstore.

Then it came back.

I cannot find a copy of the "most current Full Features software." Any one know where I can get one?

Hi @MrC6,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

 I'd like to help!

To assist better-

1) Does the copy print out the same way?

2) What's the application you are trying to print from? Have you tried printing from a different application or device?

While you respond to that, let's print a Print Quality Diagnostic page -Post the Print Quality Diagnostic page here so we can help you further.

You may also refer to this document with steps to fix the " Print Quality Issues" issue applicable to your printer -  Print Quality Issues

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

You can install the drivers from here-https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-series/790...

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I was out of town, so didn't get to try much.  Tried to print from NotePad.  Same result.  By the way, my OS is Windows XP, but that has worked fine until this breakdown.  I have Windows-10 double booted, so I am going to try printing from there (should have tried it before now).  Will let you know what happens.

Printing from Windows 10 did the same thing; one line of overwritten symbols at the top of the page and nothing else.  I don't think I mentioned it before, but the printer also says it's out of paper when it's not.  If I put in paper, every sheet in the tray will print the same way, one line of overprint, until the paper in the tray is exhausted.  I have had a couple of test pages that printed OK, but they don't print anymore.  I am through messing with this printer and am going to ditch it.  I have my eye on a Canon that I think will work for me better than the 8710, which was a real pain trying to print to various paper sizes, which I do a lot of.  But thanks for looking into this for me, it's nice to know somebody at HP gives a hoot about their product.

I respect your decision.

I am glad I can help!

If you still want to try, refer to the steps in the document -https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01954177

Hope this helps!

I have not been able to get the HP 8710 to respond to any of the solutions proposed by the HP support folks, and have replaced it with a Canon TS3522, which so far has performed flawlessly.

This thread can be closed with a "No Solution" conclusion.

Thanks to all who  have taken a look at the problem and attempted to diagnose it.
