I have a print job that cannot be canceled and as a result, nothing else can be printed.  When I ask to cancel all jobs, the other jobs are canceled but not the one that is in error.  My printer says it is in an error state.

Hi @ConnieSuomi ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand it sounds like the print job in the queue is stuck and causing the error state. Here are some steps you can try to resolve it:

Restart the Print Spooler Service:

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Scroll down to Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Restart.
  • Try printing again after restarting the service.

Clear the Print Queue:

  • Open the Printers & Scanners settings (press Win + I, then go to Devices > Printers & Scanners).
  • Select your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 and click on Open queue.
  • In the queue, try right-clicking on the stuck print job and select Cancel.
  • If that doesn't work, go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete any files in that folder (you might need to stop the Print Spooler service first as described above).

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in, turn it on, and see if the error clears.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Go to Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager), expand Printers, right-click your printer, and select Update driver.
  • If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers from the HP website.

Let me know if this resolves the issue!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
