This is the second 7640 printer I have had. I love them. I am a home user, but I do quite a bit of printing, so I tend the printers only last 12-16 months. I bought the second printer long before the first one quit so I would have it on hand when the other one wore out and wouldn't have to wait. I was thinking about doing that again. I note in looking at them a comment that they have been discontinued. I wouldn't mind buying another, but I'm wondering -- will the 62XL black and color cartridges still be around, or will they no longer be produced. If the cartridges are going to beomce obsolent, I may as well buy another type of printer. Any thoughts?

While printers may be discontinued after a year or two, HP cartridges tend to have a very long production life, typically several or more decades from initial introduction. For example, HP 45 cartridges were introduced in the early 1990's and are still available.
Very few cartridges are discontinued, the ones that are are typically very low volume products.
I do not think you need to worry about the HP 62 cartridges being discontinued in the next decade.

That cartridge only fits the Envy 5540,5660 & 7640.
Also the Officejet 8040 & 5740.
