I can print a page or two that comes out just fine.  Then I get a page that has no regular printing, just little boxes all over which contain letters and numbers inside the boxes.  The format is correct, but the characters are all nonsense.

I cannot tell you exactly what is happening.  Much depends on your Operating System, your printer software, and the application you are using to view / edit / submit the document to the printer.

I can offer the following limited observations:

Nonsensical content might be the result of document fonts that cannot be translated by the printer.

In the case of a PDF document, try printing the document "as an image" which, by its nature, requires no translation of the content.

In the case of a Word document, edit the fonts and use a TrueType font that the printer can translate / use.  Even when you embed fonts on a Word document, be sure you are using TrueType fonts.

In general, to examine / select fonts in Word:  In the box "Tell me what you want to do", type fonts > select Font Themes and select your font.  Know that "customized" fonts may cause trouble if you do not thoroughly understand the setups and limitations.  You can also check / change fonts in the drop-open box in the Home tab > in the Font box.  As you select a font, a text explanation in the menu box shows font characteristics and whether the font is a True-Type font.

The printer software may need to be reinstalled.  ??  It is possible though if the printer is "sometimes" printing OK, this is not the most likely cause of the problem.

The printer may need to be "reset".  This is usually accomplished by unplugging the power at the back of the printer (while printer is on) for 30-60 seconds and then restoring the power.  Switch the printer on and wait for it to completely boot (start).
