Hi @kyle1971,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an alignment issue with your HP OfficeJet 5222 printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist better:

  • When was the last time the printer was working fine?
  • Was there any paper jam or carriage jam recently?
  • Do you get any error messages on the printer screen?

While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, and press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware:

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product

I have almost the same problem as Kyle.

My printer is an HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 5575 All-In-One Printer. I first noticed something was amiss when I tried using its copier function and it wouldn't respond at all. Shutting it down and rebooting it did not solve the issue.

I then noticed that the printer is capable of executing print jobs, but the scanner simply refuses to work.

I switched on my computer and started the HP Smart program to see if it reports anything funny, and lo and behold, it claims a constant "printer error." When clicking for details, it tells me "The tray is empty or open. Make sure the paper you want to use is loaded, and then close the tray to continue."

This is obviously untrue, but I closed and opened the tray numerous times anyway hoping it might jigger the thing into functioning properly again.

When I tried scanning something from my computer (as opposed to using the device's onboard controls), I was told that the scanner is in use!

I reiterate that despite the printer error reporting an open tray, the printer seems to have no problems printing out any jobs sent from my computer. Nor do I understand how this error should affect the scanner function.

I have no idea whether this is a hardware or software issue.

It's also funny that Kyle reported this problem on the 22nd of July 2022 (a week ago.) I discovered the same problem about three days ago, and have not been able to fix it. The device was working perfectly the last time I used it, about two weeks ago.

Thanks for the help!

Hi thanks for the help, so from what I know the printer never really worked and I have never gotten a paper jam yet and I’ve only gotten an error message when changing the ink but that’s gone now. In regards to the alignment the prompt ask to do an alignment and when I press ok nothing happens I have to press later to leave that prompt as for the scanner when I try to scan something it tells me to update the printer which I’ve already done. When the printer is connected to my laptop it would ask me where I would like to scan to but when I click scan to computer it says scanner is busy.

Sorry for the long message 🙂
