A problem just cropped up between one of my Windows 10 v1909 systems and my HP8740 printer. I'm stumped!
The printer is on my wired network and appears normal. It works offline - copies, etc. Printing a 'network configuration page' shows the expected IPv4/IPv6 settings for itself, gateway, DNS, etc.
- I've rebooted the printer and the PC.
- Another Win10 system on the same version and patched identically (on May 12) can print normally. An iPad can print normally. The printer hasn't updated its firmware recently.
- The system with the problem can ping the printer at its IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and can access the printer's embedded web server page. On the 'Devices and Printers' page, the printer shows offline. Running Troubleshoot from right-clicking the printer's icon on that page insists that the printer is offline.
- I've rebooted the router and turned off my pi-hole ad/malware blocker - same thing.
- I ran a NetTools scan of the printer from the two different Win10 PCs and they show the same well-known ports and services.
- I tried to reinstall the printer software package but it got so screwed up that I did a bare metal restore from two days ago. (I think it printed normally at that point.) No improvement.
Any suggestions?

After trying many more things (uninstall latest Win 10 update, swapping out the Ethernet switch, ...), I changed the network cable from the printer to the network switch and things have been fine. Who'd expect that! Lesson: try the simplest things first. I'm thrilled that the printer wasn't defective.
