HP Deskjet 1513 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Printer is enlarging selected images and moving the RH edge out of the printable area (i.e., I am getting unasked-for enlargement and cropping)

I have a MS Word file with a text page header and images shrunk down to stay within the page margins. The images were taken from 'PrtSc' screenshots and pasted onto the page. The page header text prints just fine within the selected page borders but the software is enlarging the screenshots and chopping off the RH edge.

This printer successfully prints a full page (full height, full width) of Adobe Acrobat documents, MS Word all-text documents, EXCEL spreadsheets, etc.

So what am I doing wrong?

Hi @DaveL084,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

Have you made any changes to your printer software?

If your HP Deskjet 1513 is automatically enlarging and cropping images without warning or your desired settings, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Check Printer Settings:

  • Make sure that your printer settings, especially the paper size and print quality settings, are configured correctly. Incorrect settings can lead to unexpected results.

Page Layout Settings:

  • Ensure that the page layout settings in your printing software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader) match your desired print size and layout. Sometimes, software settings can override the printer settings.

Image Dimensions:

  • Ensure that the original image you are trying to print has the dimensions and aspect ratio you want. If the image is too small for the paper size you're using, the printer may enlarge it to fit.

Printer Driver Update:

  • Check if there are any updates available for your printer driver. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause printing issues. Visit the HP website and download and install the latest driver for your Deskjet 1513. Click here

Preview Before Printing:

  • Always preview your document or image before sending it to the printer. This will allow you to see how it will be printed and make any necessary adjustments.

Use Printer Software:

  • Consider using the HP printer software that came with your printer to control print settings. It may offer more control over the printing process.

Disable Scaling or Fit to Page:

  • When printing, ensure that any scaling or "Fit to Page" options are turned off. Scaling can cause images to be automatically resized to fit on the page.

Check for Page Setup Issues:

  • In your printing software, check the page setup settings to ensure they match your desired paper size and layout.

Paper Size and Type:

  • Make sure you are using the correct paper size and type for your print job. If the paper size is smaller than the image, the printer may scale it to fit.

If the issue persists after trying the above steps, you may want to contact HP customer support for further assistance. They can provide guidance and may suggest additional troubleshooting steps or a possible solution.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to try to help. To answer your qstns---

printer settings--yes, I have checked them, tried resetting them, done everything I can think of with 'em

page layout--ditto

image dimensions--I have tried reducing the image several times and the 'print' command always brings it back up to overflow the page

printer driver update--ain't gonna happen, MS no longer supports my dinosaur laptop

preview page--yes, did that, and my pages looked really pretty in preview mode

use printer software--I am using genuine HP drivers

disable scaling--I always do that

page setup issues--all looked good to me, I don't know of any setting in that window for zooming images

paper size and type--all I have in the house is standard 8&1/2x11

I tried to fool this image-enlarger-gremlin by reducing the image size and adding text to the righthand edge of the image. I had noticed that other MS Word documents (text only) printed just fine, in the exact form I had asked for. Text that was RH justified came out correctly aligned with the RH margin in these other documents. But back on my problem document, the un-commanded expanded image still spilled off (unprinted in the RH margin space) and also took the RH text with it, right off the page.  I believe this printer has a demon.

I eventually took my MS Word file and exported it as a .pdf using Adobe Acrobat. Suddenly my pages printed just fine. And my printer was saved from being dismembered by a baseball bat.
