Hi @Fitzay560 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting a "format error" in an HP OfficeJet Pro printer usually points to an issue with how the data is being sent or received between the computer and the printer. Here are some steps to troubleshoot this issue:

1. Update or Reinstall Printer Driver

  • Ensure you have the latest printer drivers. Download the latest version of the driver for the OfficeJet Pro 9730e from HP’s support page.
  • Uninstall the current driver:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, find your printer, right-click, and select Remove Device.
    • Go to Device Manager, expand Print queues, right-click on your printer, and select Uninstall device.
  • Reboot your computer, then install the newly downloaded driver.

2. Check Printer Settings

  • Access Printer Properties:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click on your printer > Printer Properties.
  • In the Advanced tab, check that the driver selected is correct.
  • Under Printing Defaults and Preferences, try changing the paper format settings to match your document's settings (e.g., A4 or Letter size).

3. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool, which can automatically diagnose and repair common printing issues.

4. USB Cable and Connection Check

  • Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, or try using a different USB cable and port.
  • If possible, test the printer on another computer to see if the issue persists, which can help isolate whether the issue is computer-specific.

5. Printer Firmware Update Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check for any available firmware updates for the OfficeJet Pro 9730e on HP’s support website, as firmware updates can fix bugs related to print job handling and formatting issues.

6. Test with a Different File Format

  • Try printing different types of files (PDF, Word, image files) to see if the format error only occurs with certain file types, which could point to compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
