Thanks for the fast response.
I was on with Zen in chat yesterday for two hours and she helped me get this sorted out. Talking to the printer over the ethernet seems to have fixed the issue. I was also having it stall for some reason on occasion, and the HP Smart could not always contact the printer. Here is what I think was going on:
I think my USB cable, or the USB port on the printer or the computer is failing.
This would be an easy thing to have people try with a similar issue.

Hi @pokerdogpad,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your HP Laserjet MFP M480 keeps switching to manual for dual-sided printing instead of automatic, this can be due to incorrect settings or driver issues. Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix the problem.
Check Printer Settings
Open Printer Preferences:
- On your computer, go to "Devices and Printers" or "Printers & Scanners" depending on your operating system.
- Right-click on your HP Laserjet MFP M480 printer and select "Printing Preferences".
Enable Duplex Printing:
- In the Printing Preferences dialog box, find the setting for "Duplex Printing" or "Two-sided (Duplex) Printing".
- Make sure "Print on Both Sides" or a similar option is selected.
- Ensure the setting is for automatic duplex printing, not manual.
Save Settings:
- Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.
Update Printer Driver
Download Latest Driver:
- Visit the HP Support website and search for the latest driver for your HP Laserjet MFP M480.
- Download and install the driver according to the instructions provided.
Reinstall Printer:
- Uninstall the current printer driver from your computer.
- Restart your computer.
- Reinstall the printer using the newly downloaded driver.
Check Printer Firmware
- Update Firmware:
- Go to the HP Support website and search for firmware updates for your HP Laserjet MFP M480.
- Follow the instructions to update your printer's firmware.
Printer Settings on Application
- Check Application Settings:
- Sometimes, settings within the application you are printing from (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat) override the printer settings.
- When printing a document, go to "Print" and check the print settings to ensure duplex printing is set to automatic.
Restart Printer
- Power Cycle:
- Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Retry printing to see if the issue is resolved.
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue and get your HP Laserjet MFP M480 to print automatically on both sides.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
