I recently aquired a second hand envy 5540 to replace my old envy 5540 which had stopped working.
I connected the new printer to my PC, set up the wifi and everything was ok and the printer worked perfectly.
I then thought because the old broken printer was enrolled in instant ink that I should cancel my instant ink subscription which I did.
The next morning I noticed a message on the new printer display saying 'Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP instant ink'. I don't recall enrolling this new printer with instant ink so why am I getting this message ?
Also when I log on to 'HP smart' I'm getting message "To print with Instant Ink cartridges, you’ll need to connect your printer to the internet via Wi-Fi or ethernet" when it already connected to wifi, blue light is on constantly.
PS I re-enrolled with instant ink hoping that this would solve problem but I'm still getting message on printer that's it's not enrolled in instant ink.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @pboo26
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like there are a few interrelated issues involving both the Instant Ink enrollment and Wi-Fi connection on your HP Envy 5540 printer. Below are several troubleshooting steps to help resolve these problems:
1. Check Printer Enrollment in Instant Ink
Re-enroll the Printer: It sounds like the printer isn't properly enrolled in Instant Ink, even though you've attempted to re-enroll it.
- Open the HP Smart app on your phone or computer.
- Go to Printers, select your Envy 5540 printer.
- Under the Instant Ink section, ensure your printer is correctly enrolled in the Instant Ink program.
- If you're using a different account or the printer’s previous Instant Ink account wasn’t cleared, it could cause conflicts. You might want to try deleting the printer from the app and adding it back to ensure it’s properly connected to your Instant Ink plan.
Log into HP Instant Ink Account:
- Go to the HP Instant Ink website and log in to your HP Instant Ink account.
- Ensure the correct printer is linked to your account. If the printer was previously enrolled with a different account, this could cause issues.
- You might need to disconnect the old printer and add the new one manually.
2. Check Printer's Wi-Fi Connection
Confirm Printer's Wi-Fi Status: Even though the blue Wi-Fi light is on, it’s important to confirm that your printer is connected to the network properly.
- Print a Network Configuration Page:
- On the printer’s control panel, press the Wireless button or go into Settings > Wireless.
- Find the option to print a Network Configuration Page or Wireless Test Report.
- Ensure that the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network and has a valid IP address.
Check the Printer’s IP Address:
- If the printer has a valid IP address and is still not able to connect to HP Instant Ink, you may need to restart your router to refresh network connections.
- If the Wi-Fi connection is unstable or the printer is disconnected, try reconnecting the printer to Wi-Fi by following these steps:
- On the printer's control panel, go to Settings > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi.
3. Clear the Printer's Instant Ink Error
Reset the Printer:
- Sometimes the printer needs a reset to clear any lingering errors related to Instant Ink enrollment or the Wi-Fi connection.
- Power off the printer.
- Unplug it from the power outlet and wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on. This should reset the printer’s status and might clear the error message.
Cartridge Authentication:
- The error message about the cartridge not being usable until enrolled in Instant Ink may be due to the printer detecting the ink cartridges as Instant Ink cartridges but not being properly enrolled in the program.
- Make sure the printer's Instant Ink cartridges are properly installed. You can try removing and reinserting the cartridges to see if that helps.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel
Thanks for your very detailed solution to my envy 5540 problem.
Unfortunately as I thought nobody was going to reply, I cancelled my instant ink subscription and bought some replacement ink cartridges as I needed to print something quite urgently.
Once again thank you for your time and I’m sorry I wasted it.
